A flowery meadow gives new houses the lightness of a landscape

The foreground occupies almost half of the canvas. Monet superimposes yellows, greens and bluish grays, then disperses small red touches which suggest the poppies without drawing them. This open strip keeps the viewer away from the houses and amplifies the feeling of space.

The facades are divided into three groups separated by gardens, fences and trees. Their walls are never pure white: mauves, blues and greens shape the shadow. Above, the dark spire of the church and the chimneys create a few fine verticals in front of a sky treated by wide passages.

Monet chose neither the intact countryside nor the dense city: he painted the edge of Argenteuil, where houses, gardens and fields are transformed together.

A large strip of meadow to slow the approach

The apparent void in the foreground is carefully constructed by variations of yellow-green. Poppies form an irregular seedling which animates the surface and gradually leads towards homes.

The white facades reflect the sky

Each house receives mauve or blue shadows, salmon roofs and some black accents in the openings. This colorful palette keeps the architecture in the same atmosphere as the landscape.

Signs of modernization without spectacular effect

New houses, fences and gardens bear witness to the growth of Argenteuil, connected to Paris by the railway. Monet integrates them into the everyday motif rather than making them a descriptive urban scene.

The house on the left tends towards blue, the one in the center towards gray, the one on the right towards green and pink. Respecting these differences avoids a monotonous alignment of white facades.

The residential outskirts of Argenteuil

Monet settled in this commune in 1871. There he observed the bridges, the Seine, the gardens and the new constructions which quickly transformed the old rural locality.

An acquisition of the Nationalgalerie in 1898

The painting passed through the dealer Paul Durand-Ruel before entering the Nationalgalerie in Berlin on December 19, 1898. It was one of the museum's early acquisitions of a French impressionist.

The reference file is provided by the Staatliche Museen zu Berlin and photographed by Joerg P. Anders. It restores the more gray and purple tones of the canvas, often replaced in reproductions by overly saturated greens and blues.
