An old beige mill dominates a dirt road on the banks of the Crau; two women chat near a purple fence, while houses, cypresses and blue mountains stretch out under a turquoise sky.
Look at the work
The Tabatière mill on the threshold of the plain
The building stands on the right, seen from below. Its stairs, awnings and irregular volumes are drawn by changes in brush direction rather than rigid architecture.
On the left, the landscape opens towards Crau and the Alpilles. The two dark figures give the scale; fences, fields and waterways form colorful bands that lead towards the horizon.
La Maison de La Crau, also called Le Vieux Moulin, is a 64.8 × 54 cm oil on canvas painted in Arles in September 1888. Listed F550/JH1577, it is kept at the Buffalo AKG Art Museum under number 1966:9.22.
Composition, touch and color
Three observations specific to this painting
The museum highlights the slow preparation hidden behind rapid execution: Van Gogh systematically varies the orientation of the keys to differentiate sky, walls, vegetation, path and mountains.
Architecture is made of brushstrokes
Vertical touches on the tower, diagonal touches on the roofs and horizontal accents on the steps give the building its solidity without erasing the material.
Color exceeds observation
Lapis mountains, sea green sky, purple fence and orange roofs reflect the intensity felt in the South rather than a strictly local color.
Two figures humanize the site
The women placed at the side of the path are small, but their exchange introduces a daily scene into this landscape dominated by the mill.
Documented benchmarks
Precisely identify the original work
The institutional notice documents the local name of the mill, dimensions, signature, provenance and entry into the collection.
The Tabatière or Jonquet mill
The building was known locally by these names. Van Gogh isolates it on the edge of the La Crau plain, near Arles.
"Vincent" bottom right
The canvas bears the artist's undated signature in the lower right corner.
Legacy A. Conger Goodyear
Acquired by A. Conger Goodyear in 1927, the work was bequeathed to the museum and entered the collection in 1966.

- The two women by the side of the road
- The purple fence
- The lapis blue mountains
