À propos de l’œuvre
La Maison blanche, la nuit, par Vincent van Gogh
Vincent van Gogh · June 16, 1890 · Auvers-sur-Oise, France
The White House at nightReproduction of oil painting on canvas
A long white house with green shutters stands under a turbulent blue sky. A red window, an orange door and the star surrounded by light are enough to transform this rue d'Auvers into a tense and luminous nocturnal.
Look at the work
A calm facade under a rotating sky
The house crosses almost the entire width. Its red-brown roof descends diagonally, while the windows and shutters repeat thin green rectangles. Three dark figures advance on the road; the one in the foreground stands out in front of the gate.
Above the roof, the sky is painted in long touches of blue, turquoise and white. The luminous star, generally identified with Venus, is surrounded by concentric rings. The small red window near the center acts as a second source of tension.
The architecture remains readable and everyday, but the opposing colors and movement of the sky give the scene an intensity that goes beyond the simple village view.
Composition, touch and color
Three observations specific to this painting
The work ↔КАса-511, F766/JH2031, can be recognized by its long white facade, its green shutters, its red window and the star placed in the upper right quarter.
A facade punctuated with verticals
Doors, shutters, fireplaces and pillars cut out the long horizontal of the building. This regular grid resists the circular movement of the sky.
Two orange-red accents
The ground floor door and the red window near the center concentrate the warm colors. They make the night appear bluer and suggest an interior presence.
A sky painted in orbits
The keys are organized around the star and propagate throughout the upper part. Van Gogh thus transforms point light into atmospheric movement.

Completed before June 17
In his letter of June 17, 1890, Van Gogh said he had two studies in progress and described precisely "a white house in the middle of greenery" with a star and an orange window.
Dark green, off pink, orange
The artist's own description emphasizes the dark greenery, a muffled pink note and the orange light of the window: the three colorful tensions still visible in the canvas.
From the Otto Krebs collection to the Hermitage
Acquired by the German collector Otto Krebs, the work entered the collections of the Hermitage Museum in Saint Petersburg after the Second World War.
