Houses in the Snow, Denver W1394hand painted reproduction

Two isolated houses emerge from a vast snowy slope. Behind them, a blue-green band marks the sea or the fjord, then a pink and gray sky occupies the top of the canvas. Monet simplifies the Norwegian village to a few dark shapes and a red fireplace. The snow, far from white, mixes pink, lilac, turquoise and ocher in long touches that follow the terrain.

Look at the work

Two tiny houses give the scale of a snow slope crossed by pink and blue

The buildings are grouped slightly to the right of the center. Their white roofs stand out thanks to the red-brown walls and purple shadows. The fireplace in the house on the left acts as a small vertical accent in the middle of a mostly horizontal landscape.

The foreground rises towards the houses and occupies more than half of the canvas. The keys follow the slope in long diagonals pale pink, sky blue and sea green. At the back, a turquoise band separates the terrain from the sky without forming a hard boundary.

Monet transforms snow into a colored surface: houses are not the main subject, but the landmarks which reveal its immensity.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

The first painting of the Norwegian stay

The Denver Art Museum presents this work as the first painted by Monet upon his arrival in Norway. It precedes the fjord and Mount Kolsaas series, but already establishes its observation of snow effects.

02

A scale-based composition

The buildings occupy a very small portion of the field. Their size makes the foreground larger and accentuates the isolation of the site. Enlarging them in a reproduction would cause you to lose this breath.

03

Snow as a mixture of colors

Pure whites remain rare. Monet uses sky roses, shadow blues and reflected greens. The painter of reproduction must preserve these passages rather than covering the ground with a uniform hue.

Reference image

Read this specific version

The single reference image measures 1,280 × 905 px. It corresponds to composition W1394 from the Denver Art Museum and has been encoded as a real WebP to its native definition, without artificial enlargement.

Composition01

A horizon placed very high

The distant strip is located in the upper quarter. This framing gives priority to the snowy slope and the path of the gaze towards the houses, while keeping enough sky to diffuse the light.

Color02

Peach pink, turquoise and red brown

The houses provide the warmest and darkest notes. The ground takes up the pink of the sky and the blue of the distance. This circulation of colors connects the planes despite their simplicity.

Matter03

Oblique gestures to shape the terrain

The touches of snow are not placed at random: their directions describe the slope and its undulations. Their rhythm must remain visible so that the foreground appears neither flat nor empty.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

These landmarks concern precisely the painting of the Denver Art Museum, inventory 39.2017 and Wildenstein 1394.

Identification01

Denver Art Museum 39.2017, W1394

Painted in 1895, this oil on canvas measures 25 5/16 × 36 1/2 inches, or 65.6 × 92.7 cm. It belongs to the Frederic C. Hamilton Collection of the Denver Art Museum.

Travel02

Monet joins Jacques Hoschedé in Norway

The artist arrived in January 1895 in the Christiania region, today Oslo. He then settled near Sandvika, where snow, fjords, villages and Mount Kolsaas became his main motifs.

Historical03

A work now preserved in Denver

Long known by the market and a private collection, the painting now bears the number 39.2017. Its entry into the Denver collection allows this version to be clearly identified among several houses under the snow.
