Weaver seen from the front, F27Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

A weaver works behind the imposing framework of his loom. The window dimly illuminates the interior, while the beams, wires and roll of fabric almost enclose the worker's body.

Look at the work

The loom becomes the entire architecture of the scene

Van Gogh places the worker in the center, but the grid of the loom crosses him from all sides. The roll loaded with fabric closes the foreground and the small, clear window balances the figure on the left.

Oily browns, black greens and ochres build the old wood. A few whitish lines indicate the stretched threads, the edge of the fabric and the reflections on the uprights.

Weaver seen from the front F27/JH503 is an oil on canvas mounted on a 47.5 × 61 cm panel painted in Nuenen in July 1884. It bears inventory 1237 (MK).

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

This painting belongs to the numerous studies of weavers carried out in Nuenen. The machine is not a decoration: its bars, rollers and wires entirely determine the place of the body.

01

The weaver seems caught up in the trade

The vertical uprights frame the face and arms like a grid. This construction makes the cramped conditions of the domestic workshop noticeable.

02

Window measures darkness

Its cream tiles are the only large light source. They bring out by contrast the lamp, the hands and the few white threads.

03

The roller gives weight to the foreground

The cylindrical mass of the fabric crosses the entire lower width and advances towards the viewer, as the most material part of the work accomplished.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

The painting is F27/JH503 and not F83. The museum keeps it under number 1237 (MK), with a format of 47.5 × 61 cm.

Nuenen

A community of weavers

In 1884, Van Gogh worked in a village where home weaving remained very present. He multiplies his drawings and paintings to understand the profession and its gestures.

Machine

An old oak loom

Van Gogh describes to Theo these brown machines, marked with scratches and stains. He seeks both their exact construction and the rhythm of their operation.

Collection

A donation received in 1930

AP van Hoey Smith donated the painting to the Museum Boijmans Van Beuningen in 1930. It was inventoried there under number 1237 (MK).

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy must preserve the complex grid of the loom, the bright window, the ocher face, the hands at work, the light threads and the heavy roll of fabric in the foreground.

  • Dark amounts around the face
  • The nine bright tiles of the window
  • The hanging lamp near the worker
  • White wires stretched in the machine
  • The large roll of fabric in the foreground
