À propos de l’œuvre

Blanche Hoschedé enfant, par Claude Monet

Claude Monet · portrait · 1880 · W619

Blanche Hoschedé child W619hand painted reproduction

Blanche Hoschedé appears in bust, her head slightly inclined under a red hat trimmed with green and flowers. Her very pale pink garment stands out in front of a garden trellis where greens, blues and browns remain freely brushed. Painted in 1880, this oil portrait on canvas measuring 46 × 38 cm belongs to the Musée d'Orsay under number RF 1948 20; it is deposited at the Museum of Fine Arts in Rouen and corresponds to Wildenstein 619.

Look at the work

Calm face is organized around a red hat that connects the figure to the garden

The girl is framed close to the shoulders and placed slightly to the left. The tilt of the head softens the vertical of the format, while the edge of the hat forms an oblique above the face. The eyes do not directly seek the viewer, which maintains a natural attitude.

The red of the hat constitutes the densest accent. It is taken up by small pink touches in the cheeks and the garment, then balanced by the green ribbon and the trellis. The background is not a descriptive decoration: its crosspieces and foliage circulate the light around the silhouette.

Monet does not separate the figure from its environment: the same greens, pinks and blues pass from the hat to the face, from the garment to the garden and give the portrait its vibration.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A portrait of Blanche as a teenager

Born in 1865, Blanche Hoschedé is represented around fourteen or fifteen years old. Daughter of Alice and Ernest Hoschedé, she grew up with Monet, became a painter herself and married Jean Monet in 1897.

02

A physiognomy constructed without academic finish

The eyes, nose and mouth are precisely placed, but the facial transitions remain made of visible touches. Roses, beiges and bluish grays shape the skin without continuous contouring.

03

The trellis stabilizes a very free bottom

The oblique and vertical lines behind the girl give structure to the garden. They prevent foliage from becoming a simple stain and respond to the edges of the hat.

Reference image

Read this specific version

The only image comes from the official file of the RF 1948 20 version. Its native definition of 416 × 500 px is preserved and encoded in real WebP, without artificial enlargement.

Composition01

Respect the discreet inclination of the head

It determines the expression and the relationship between the face and the hat. Straightening the figure would make it more official and lose the spontaneity of the pose.

Color02

Keep the nuanced red of the hat

The headdress mixes vermilion, pink, brown and small bright areas. A flat red would dominate the face too strongly and erase the material of the fabric and ornaments.

Matter03

Keep the background readable but not detailed

The trellis must remain perceptible behind touches of vegetation. Too much precision would distract attention; too little would remove the depth and atmosphere of the garden.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

The Musée d'Orsay documents Blanche Hoschedé as a child, oil on canvas from 1880, 46 × 38 cm, RF inventory 1948 20 and Wildenstein catalog 619.

Model01

Blanche Hoschedé, future painter

She often worked outdoors with Monet and developed her own impressionist work. After her marriage to Jean, she became both his daughter-in-law and his daughter-in-law.

Titles02

Several titles for the same portrait

The notice also mentions Portrait of Blanche Hoschedé's youth and Portrait of Blanche Hoschedé at 14 years old. These variants all refer to the W619 version.

Provenance03

A legacy from Blanche Hoschedé-Monet in 1948

Preserved until then in its collection in Giverny, the painting was bequeathed to the State. Assigned to the Louvre then to the Musée d'Orsay, it has been deposited in Rouen since 1952.

Presentation in your interior

A palette designed with the room

This vertical portrait easily finds its place in a bedroom, a library or near a console. A gray green, powder pink or ivory wall and a matte gold or walnut frame enhance the hat without hardening the face.
