Antibes W1160hand painted reproduction

The old town of Antibes and the towers of Château Grimaldi emerge in front of a long chain of snow-capped Alps, between a milky sky and a silvery sea. Signed and dated Claude Monet 88 lower left, this oil on canvas measuring 65.4 × 81.3 cm belongs to the Pérez Simón collection and corresponds to Wildenstein 1160.

Look at the work

Antibes seems to float between the Mediterranean and the Alps

The city occupies a compact area to the left of the center, set on a dark promontory. The two vertical towers dominate the light walls, but remain small facing the mountain range which crosses almost the entire width.

Sky, snow and water share pinkish whites, pale blues and pearly grays. A few more intense oranges and purples in the foreground anchor the scene and prevent light from completely dissolving the shore.

Monet brings together in the same harmony the warmth of the coast and the snow of the Alps: two climates visible at the same time from Antibes on a clear day.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

The off-center city

Placed slightly to the left, Antibes does not become an isolated monument. It serves as a measure between the expanse of the sea in the foreground and the almost unreal mass of the mountains.

02

An alpine chain painted in small breaks

The peaks are drawn by blue, pink and white accents without continuous outline. They must remain distant while clearly colder than the city.

03

The Mediterranean made almost silver

Instead of a uniform blue, water mixes whites, pinks, grays and horizontal blue lines. This vibration reflects the sky and gives its luminous calm to the composition.

Composition01

Preserve the small scale of Antibes

The towers structure the view but must not become massive. Their finesse maintains the panoramic relationship between city, sea and mountains.

Color02

Keep the Alps pink and blue

Snow receives warm light and cold shadows. Pure white would remove atmospheric volumes and depth.

Matter03

Keep horizontal touches of water

They vary in length, color and density. Their superposition makes the Mediterranean shimmer without transforming it into a smooth surface.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

Christie's documents Antibes, oil on canvas from 1888, 65.4 × 81.3 cm, signed and dated lower left, and listed Wildenstein 1160.

Campaign01

A Mediterranean stay from January to May 1888

Monet moved to Antibes to study a brighter light than that of Normandy. He paints the coast, the gardens, the fortified city and the Alps visible in the distance.

Provenance02

Durand-Ruel acquired the painting in October 1890

The work then passed through Jean d'Alayer, Sam Salz, Theodore Cummings and the Newhouse Galleries before joining the Pérez Simón collection.

Version03

The Wildenstein 1160 canvas

The old town in the center left, the two towers, the long snow-covered range and the almost white sea precisely distinguish this view from other Antibes from 1888.
