The Notre-Dame de Vernon church emerges behind the poplars and houses on the bank, struck by an oblique sun which transforms the stone into an orange mass. Monet does not describe every Gothic detail: he makes the facade and the tower appear with accords of yellow, pink, purple and blue, above a Seine where the light fragments.
Look at the work
The composition is shared by the flexible line of the bank. The trees form a vertical screen in front of the building, while the tower rises slightly to the right of the center. At the bottom, the Seine retains an open strip which keeps the viewer away and allows reflections to extend the sky and the facades.
The sun is not directly depicted. Its effect can be read in the warm yellows of the church, the roses of the mist and the colder blues that maintain the shadows. The contours of the bell tower, houses and trees touch without completely merging: the image remains readable while giving the sensation of a luminous air.
W1387 makes the church an atmospheric event: the stone remains recognizable, but its presence depends entirely on the light passing through the bank.
Composition, touch and light
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.
After simpler designs in Port-Villez, Monet worked in 1894 around Vernon, downstream of Giverny. He observes the city from the other bank in order to bring together water, poplars, houses and the Notre-Dame church in a depth made of superimposed planes.
The warmest area focuses on architecture. Yellow and orange touches meet mauves and blues in the shaded areas. For faithful reproduction, the church must emerge by contrast of temperature rather than by a dark circle.
The vertical touches of the trunks and buildings tighten the middle of the canvas. The surface of the Seine is more horizontal and calmer. This opposition gives the city its height and prevents the whole from becoming a uniform mosaic.

The poplars interrupt the facade and impose several finer verticals. The tower remains the main landmark, but it is never isolated as in an architectural view.
Warm tones advance over the church, while blues cool the foliage and water. Small pink covers unite these two families and give the air its vibration.
Trees are mounted in vertical accents, walls in more compact touches and water in elongated passages. The copy must preserve these distinct directions to maintain depth.

This oil on canvas executed in 1894 measures 66.4 × 92.4 cm. It is signed "Claude Monet" and dated 94 at the bottom left.
Monet devoted a significant part of his 1894 work to the banks of the Seine near Giverny. This version belongs to the views where the church of Vernon becomes the luminous center of the motif.
The painting appears in the exhibition Paintings by Claude Monet organized in Paris by Durand-Ruel in 1895 under the title Vernon, Soleil, then circulated in several American collections.
