Beyond a bank covered with reeds, the Notre-Dame de Vétheuil church raises its gray bell tower under a milky sky. A large bouquet of silvery vegetation occupies the center right, agitated by the wind and lit intermittently, while the Seine reflects greens, blues and yellows. Painted in 1881 from a moored boat, this oil on canvas measuring 59.7 × 73.3 cm belongs to a private collection and corresponds to Wildenstein 697.

The Vétheuil bell tower behind an island of foliage

The village and the church group together in the upper left third. In front of them, a mass of reeds and shrubs hides part of the buildings and advances to the center of the canvas. The Seine forms a wide horizontal band which separates the viewer from the shore.

The cream walls and pink roofs respond to the bluish gray sky. The vegetation is constructed by touches of green, turquoise and silver, some of which tilt as if under a gust. In the water, the same colors stretch horizontally and become reflections.

The bell tower remains the most stable landmark, but Monet places mobile vegetation in front of him: the monument and the meteorological moment measure against each other.

A dialogue between architecture and foliage

The bell tower stands vertically to the left while the central vegetation bends and disperses. This opposition gives the landscape its tension without resorting to a narrative scene.

A viewpoint chosen from the Seine

The Christie's notice specifies that Monet works from a moored boat. This low position explains the importance of water and the screen formed by the islets of reeds between the painter and the village.

A light interrupted by clouds

The sky remains clear but overcast. Brighter passages reach the church side and silver leaves, creating a succession of accents rather than uniform lighting.

Its inclined branches give the main movement of W697. It must remain crossed by blue, green and white, without becoming an opaque mass.

Matter03

Keep the horizontal reflections of the Seine

The touches of the water must lengthen and take on the colors of the sky and the banks. A uniform blue surface would cut the atmospheric link between the planes.
