Under a gray sky, the rocky slopes of the Creuse fold around an almost hidden river, in masses of mauve, green and brown. Signed Claude Monet 89, this oil on canvas measuring 65.5 × 81.2 cm is kept at the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston under number 06.115 and corresponds to Wildenstein 1221.

Overcast weather reveals the deep architecture of the valley

Two slopes frame the river corridor and lead to a clear gap in the center. The first rocky plane descends steeply, while the successive reliefs close almost all access to the horizon.

The diffused light brings the values together: mauve, blue gray, pinkish brown and olive green respond to each other on the slopes. The light touches do not designate direct sunshine, but the humidity which envelops the valley.

The gray day does not erase the landscape: it allows Monet to make its folds, distances and material felt without resorting to strong contrasts.

The slopes overlap like successive planes. Their difference in color, more than their design, guides the eye to the back of the throat.

In Fresselines, Monet takes over the same valleys under several effects. W1221 isolates overcast weather and allows the structure of the site to be compared to its sunny versions.

They are essential to the unity of the picture and prevent slopes from becoming uniformly brown or greenish.

Keep the river discreet

It appears in fragments between the slopes. Lightening it excessively would create an artificial axis absent from this gray version.
