À propos de l’œuvre

Deux mains, par Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh · April 1885 · Nuenen, Netherlands

Two hands, F66Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

Two studies of peasant hands are superimposed on a small vertical support: at the top, the fingers fold into the shadow; lower down, an open palm receives a yellow light. Van Gogh paints a true portrait of joints and worked skin.

Look at the work

Two isolated gestures in a dull light

The upper hand, smaller and darker, is seen from the side with the fingers partially closed. The lower hand opens towards the viewer; his wrist enters from the left and his fingers stand out against a green-brown background.

The skin tones are not pink. Ocher yellows, olive greens, browns and almost black lines build the phalanges, nails and palm hollows in abrupt contrasts.

Deux mains F66/JH743 is an oil on canvas mounted on wood of 29.5 × 19 cm painted in Nuenen in April 1885. The painting is kept in a private collection in the Netherlands.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The painting is a painted study, not drawing F1155/JH744 from the Van Gogh Museum. Both hands are treated as autonomous volumes whose gesture, light and wear tell the story of the work.

01

The two poses respond to each other

The top hand closes while the bottom hand opens. This opposition animates a narrow format without resorting to a face or a complete scene.

02

The contours change force

Some fingers are surrounded by dark brown; others blend into the background. These variations avoid the effect of a dry anatomical plank.

03

Yellow shapes the skin

Lemon yellow and ocher lights focus on the lower palm. They bring out the joints and give the flesh a rough quality.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

The image, technique and format identify F66/JH743, an April 1885 painting measuring 29.5 × 19 cm. It must be distinguished from Two Hands and Two Arms F1155/JH744, which is a different design.

Identity

F66 and JH743

These numbers correspond to the small vertical oil showing two hands superimposed. The canvas was fixed on a wooden support.

Context

Studies for peasant figures

In the spring of 1885, Van Gogh multiplied his heads, arms and hands in order to master the actions of the inhabitants of Nuenen, when he prepared The Potato Eaters.

Collection

A work in private hands

The painting does not belong to the Van Gogh Museum. The catalogs place it in a particular collection in the Netherlands.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy should preserve the two distinct poses, the irregular brown outlines, the ocher yellow lights, the green shadows and the large dark interval that separates the hands.

  • The upper hand partially closed
  • The lower palm open towards the viewer
  • The angular design of the phalanges
  • Yellow accents on the skin
  • The green-brown background without narrative detail
