Reproduction details

Claude Monet · The port of Le Havre in November 1872 · Marmottan Monet Museum

Printing, rising sun W263hand painted reproduction

An orange sun rises in the mist of the port of Le Havre. Two ferry boats slide in the foreground, in front of barely visible cranes, chimneys and masts. Monet reduces the motif to ratios of color and light: this canvas will soon give its name to impressionism.

Look at the work

An orange disk is enough to transform the mist

The nearest boat, slightly to the right of center, bears two dark silhouettes. A second boat appears behind her. Their black and green reflections stabilize the foreground without interrupting the sheet of turquoise blue fog.

The sun, small but saturated, stands out in the gray sky. Its column of reflections descends to the water in irregular orange touches. On the left and at the bottom, quays, cranes, masts and smoke overlap without firm contours, as if absorbed by the atmosphere.

The subject is not just the port: it's the moment when the orange light makes visible, then erases, the water, the boats and the industry.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A decisive chromatic contrast

The orange of the sun and its reflection opposes the blue-green of the mist. Its small surface area is enough to govern the entire palette.

02

Two boats to enter space

The first gives the scale, the second creates a step towards the port. Their oblique position leads the gaze towards the sun.

03

A port built without a closed drawing

Cranes, chimneys and ships are indicated by verticals and transparent masses. Mist remains the true link between shapes.

Reference image

Read this specific version

The reference corresponds to inventory 4014 and Wildenstein number 263. The WebP file retains the available colors and definition without artificial enlargement, in order to preserve delicate transitions from mist.

Composition01

A very low composition

The port line crosses the lower third, leaving most of the format to the misty sky and its light.

Color02

Orange posed as a final accent

The museum indicates that the bright sun, its reflections and the boats are added as Monet finishes the painting.

Matter03

Visible and light layers

The background reveals the canvas and the covers. The touches in the foreground are more assertive than the silhouettes of the port.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

The Marmottan Monet museum keeps this painting under inventory 4014; it corresponds to number 263 of the Wildenstein catalog raisonné.

Viewpoint01

From Admiralty Hotel

Monet looks southeast of the outer port of Le Havre. The quays at Bois and Courbe frame the opening of the transatlantic lock.

Historical title02

First impressionist exhibition, 1874

Presented under the title Impression, rising sun, the painting inspired the critic Louis Leroy to use the word which would soon designate movement.

Collection03

Don Donop de Monchy, 1940

Eugène and Victorine Donop de Monchy donated the work to the Marmottan museum, where it entered on May 23, 1940 under inventory 4014.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • Preserve the exact ratio between the orange of the sun and the blue-green of the mist.
  • Keep the two boats and their silhouettes without detailing them excessively.
  • Make cranes, masts and chimneys appear in degrees of transparency.
  • Construct the reflection of the sun in interrupted touches, never in a uniform column.

Presentation in your interior

A palette designed with the room

The canvas combines a very soft blue-gray atmosphere with an intense orange dot. It becomes a bright focus in a living room, bedroom or office; a soft black, walnut or bronze frame highlights the sun without weighing down the mist.
