À propos de l’œuvre

Intérieur, Après dîner, par Claude Monet

Claude Monet · A dining room lit by lamp and fire · National Gallery of Art

Interior, after dinner W130hand painted reproduction

In an almost black room, a hanging lamp illuminates the round table, three cups and the silhouettes of two women. A bearded man leans against the fireplace where the fire is still burning. Monet constructs this scene from 1868 -1869 with a few bright foci - lampshades, yellow tablecloth, faces, porcelain and embers - which bring out a silent intimacy from the darkness.

Look at the work

Two opposite lights reveal the figures in a dark dining room

The brass lamp hangs to the left of the center. Its light lampshade diffuses concentrated light on the oval table, the tea set and the woman sitting facing the viewer. A second woman, seen from behind in a slate blue dress, occupies the foreground and connects the table to the fireplace.

On the right, the man in the black suit leans over the fireplace mantel. The mirror partially reflects the heads and a blue-gray vase, enlarging the space without making it lighter. The flowered curtain, the striped carpet and the embers bring reds and ochres which respond to the warmth of the lamp.

The room is not described by its walls, but by the islands of light that bring people and objects together.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

The lamp as a light axis

Placed almost in the center of the left half, it immediately catches the eye. Its light descends on the table then weakens towards faces and clothes, organizing the scene by degrees rather than by contours.

02

Two distinct heat sources

The lamp produces a pale, metallic yellow; the fire diffuses oranges and reds lower down. Between them, blacks, greens and blues remain colored, which prevents the interior from becoming monochrome.

03

Figures embedded in the shadows

The characters are not cut out like in a collective portrait. The man's costume merges with the darkness, the back dress takes up the blue of the decor and only the faces or collars briefly capture the light.

Reference image

Read this specific version

The image opened to the public by the National Gallery of Art corresponds to inventory 1983.1.26 and Wildenstein number 130. The file was limited to 3,000 × 2,321 px then encoded in WebP, without artificial enlargement.

Composition01

The lampshade remains bright without being pure white

Ivory, yellow and gray shape its sides and frames. A uniform white area would remove the construction of the lamp and disrupt the balance with the table.

Color02

Black contains color

Deep green, brown, slate blue and dark red circulate in the darkness. These shades allow you to separate curtain, wall, costume and furniture without artificially lightening the scene.

Matter03

The fire responds to the table without dominating it

The embers are concentrated in the chimney opening and reflect lightly on the carpet. Their intensity must remain local so that the lamp retains its main role.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

Made in 1868 -1869, this oil on canvas of 50.2 × 65.4 cm is signed Claude Monet in red at the bottom left. It is kept at the National Gallery of Art under the 1983.1.26 inventory and classified Wildenstein 130.

Historical title01

Exhibited in 1880 as The Dining Room

The National Gallery of Art documents his presentation at the La Vie Moderne gallery, under number 16. Other titles have circulated, including Famille Sisley, but the current inventory retains Interior, after Dinner.

Provenance02

A story followed since Eugène Deudon

The work goes through Durand-Ruel, Swedish collections then Hirschl & Adler in New York. Paul Mellon acquired it in 1966 with his wife before offering it to the National Gallery of Art in 1983.

Collection03

Gift of Paul and Bunny Mellon

The credit note published by the museum is Collection of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Mellon. The image is distributed freely, which allows you to precisely study the dark values and the red signature.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • Maintain the contrast between lamp, table and darkness.
  • Color black with green, blue, brown and red.
  • Holding partially fused figures in space.
  • Limit the brightness of the fire to the nearby fireplace and carpet.

Presentation in your interior

A palette designed with the room

This intimate scene is suitable for a library, living room or dining room with deep tones. A dark walnut, weathered black or bronze frame highlights the gold of the lamp and the fire; soft, side lighting preserves subtle passages from darkness.
