At the end of the frost of January 1893, the Seine was covered with broken plates which drifted in front of the bank of Bennecourt. Monet contrasts their bluish white with the purple-brown of the trees and the yellow reflections of the sky. The natural event becomes a vast horizontal composition where each piece of ice seems to advance at its own pace.
Look at the work
The river occupies almost the entire width of the canvas. In the background, a low bank connects the clump of trees on the left to the lighter hillside on the right. In the foreground, the irregular plaques approach the viewer; their increasing scale gives depth without resorting to an architectural perspective.
The water is neither uniformly blue nor gray. Yellow and pink passages reflect the sky between the ice cubes, while denser purples extend the trees. Short touches follow the current; on the ice, they become lighter and thicker in order to distinguish the material.
In W1340, the thaw is not a winter setting: it is the very movement of the river, made visible by the light.
Composition, touch and light
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.
Monet worked on the banks of Bennecourt and Port-Villez when the Seine froze, then when the ice broke. W1340 belongs to the Wildenstein group 1333 -1344, in which he follows the transformation of the same landscape almost day after day.
The wooded mass visible beyond the river corresponds to the island of La Forée. Its dark silhouette forms a stable screen against the movement of ice cubes. The painting thus stands in balance between a still bank and a fragmented surface.
The ice sheets are not surrounded. Monet separates them from the water by deviations in value, milky blues and flares of off-white. Faithful reproduction should preserve these vibrant edges instead of hardening them.

The strip of land remains thin so that the river dominates the composition. The largest ice cubes, placed near the lower edge, place the manhole at water level.
The cold tones of the ice come alive with pink reflections. The yellows are reserved for water openings and the sky, while the red-brown of the trees concentrates the left part.
The current receives flexible horizontal marks; the ice cubes are constructed in small opaque indentations; the bank combines smears and vertical touches. These differences give the landscape its readability.

The Walker Art Gallery preserves this painting under WAG number 6133; Daniel Wildenstein's catalog raisonné records it under number 1340.
Painted in 1893, this oil on canvas measures 65 × 100 cm. It is listed as Wildenstein 1340 and represents the Seine as the ice sheet breaks up.
The work belongs to the collections of the National Museums Liverpool. It is kept at the Walker Art Gallery under inventory number WAG 6133.
Monet has known this sector of the Seine since his stay in Bennecourt in 1868. In 1893, he returned there from Giverny to observe the ice, the debacle and the rapid changes of light on the river.
