At dawn, Nettle Island stands like a mass of blue-green foliage on the still Seine. A very pale sky, tinged with pink near the horizon, extends almost without breaking into the water. The trees and their reflection come together in misty material, while a small opening on the left reveals the river beyond.

Look at the work

A blue-green island rises in the morning mist and extends into the Seine with an almost symmetrical reflection

The vegetation rises in several rounded masses, from the small isolated tree on the left to the large volume on the right. Caps of cream and pink rest on the greens and blues, as if the light of dawn caught the humidity of the leaves.

The line that separates the island from its reflection remains very discreet. In the water, the colors descend then fragment into mauve, pink, green and light yellow. This dissolution makes the reflection larger than the shore and gives the landscape its silent quality.

Monet doesn't just paint the island: he paints the moment when mist, water and foliage become almost a single material.

Frontal view of the island

After the Mornings framed between two banks, Monet turns his gaze towards Nettle Island itself. The vegetation occupies the center and its reflection constructs the lower half of the painting.

A deliberately dissolved horizon

The pale blue of the sky joins that of the water, while the bank is reduced to a colored line. Preserving this passage avoids transforming the landscape into two clearly separated strips.

Light rendered by clear keys

Creamy whites, roses and very light yolks cover the colder foliage. They evoke dew and dawn without drawing the leaves individually.

Cold palette warmed near horizon

Blue, green and purple dominate, but a very pale pink crosses the sky and the Seine. This balance produces the atmosphere of the day that begins.

A place acquired by the painter in 1886

Located near the mouth of the Epte, less than two kilometers from Giverny, Île aux Nettles serves as a family shelter and mooring point for the workshop boat.

A provenance linked to Durand-Ruel03

Purchased directly from Monet in January 1900

The Durand-Ruel gallery acquired the painting from Monet on January 26, 1900. It then moved to New York and joined the collection of doctor Moses Allen Starr the same year.
