Artwork description
Claude Monet · 1897 · Metropolitan Museum 60.154 · W1491
A mass of trees advances from the right edge and occupies almost the entire height, while the left side opens onto water and milky skies. The mist erases the horizon line and reduces distant planes to purple and pink passages. The trunks, foliage and their reflections assemble around a soft diagonal, as if the island were floating between two atmospheres.

Look at the work
The trees on the right are formed by touches of blue-green, purple, pink and brown. Their silhouette remains compact at the top, then divides into lighter trunks near the water. The reflections extend this mass downwards, but their shapes dilute and move apart. This sliding maintains the weight of the island without creating rigid symmetry.
On the left, the space is much more open. The cream and pink sky blends into pale blue water, separated only by a few horizontal lines and a small distant bank. The red signature placed at the bottom left acts as a warm accent in this general calm. The opposition between luminous void and dense vegetation builds depth without geometric perspective.
The mist removes the horizon, but the island remains anchored by the mass of its trees and by the irregular reflection which descends into the Seine.
Composition, touch and light
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

Blue, green, mauve and pink make up the foliage. Preserving these passages prevents the right bank from becoming a black silhouette and keeps the atmosphere humid.
Sky and water are separated by only small differences in value. A clear line would break the mist; total fusion would remove the depth of the distance.
Under the trunks, the keys lengthen and spread apart. This deformation must remain visible so that the water appears mobile without losing the weight of the island.
Details and visual documents
The additional images show the difficult-to-read passages in the full view and, where it exists, the actual appearance of the work at the museum.

The view from the Metropolitan Museum measures 1,905 × 1,518 px. Both native details measure 900 × 1,000 px. No files have been artificially enlarged; all three media are true decodable WebPs.
Documented benchmarks
These landmarks document the Metropolitan Museum version, inventory 60.154 and Wildenstein 1491, painted and dated 1897.
This oil on canvas measures 73.3 × 92.7 cm. It is signed and dated 97 at the bottom left, bears the number 60.154 at the Metropolitan Museum and corresponds to the number 1491 of the Wildenstein catalog.
The Metropolitan Museum specifies that Monet owned this island near Vernon and moored several boats there. The pattern is located near the confluence of the Epte and the Seine, downstream of Giverny.
Monet painted four views of this island in 1897. The museum highlights their foggy atmosphere, close to that of the Mornings on the Seine, as well as the signature and date worn by each.
