A low, wooded island barely stands out from a pink and blue mist. Its main silhouette occupies the right, while a smaller islet opens the Seine on the left. In the water, the trees extend with long touches of purple, green and cream. Monet paints less of a stable place than a morning when the light still hesitates between sky, shore and reflection.

Look at the work

Two masses of trees emerge from an almost horizonless space, then dissolve into the calm Seine

The large islet rises gently to the right and remains separated from the edge of the painting by a narrow light strip. On the left, a smaller plant shape creates an interval of water and sky. This gap gives depth to a composition where the horizon remains almost invisible.

The reflection does not faithfully reproduce the silhouette. The gestures lengthen, fragment and change temperature: cold green under the trees, purple and pink in the mist passages, cream near the central opening. The signature and date of 1897 are placed in the lower left.

The scene lies in the very fine difference between the clear mist and the islands, present enough to be recognized but never hardened.

An off-center silhouette

The main mass slides to the right and lets the left third breathe. Maintaining this balance avoids transforming the island into a central block that is too heavy.

An almost erased horizon

The sky and the Seine share very close roses, blues and grays. The dividing line must not be reinforced: it is its indecision that gives the morning atmosphere.

A freer reflection than his model

In water, verticals break and widen. They extend vegetation without producing exact symmetry, which maintains surface mobility.

Blue, green and purple dominate, but a pale pink crosses the sky and returns to the water. This discreet warmth distinguishes dawn from a uniformly gray scene.

Contours constructed by touches

Trees emerge by superimposing short, clear marks. The edges remain porous so that the atmosphere circulates between the vegetation and the bottom.

The Islands at Port-Villez, Wildenstein 1493

Sotheby's dates the painting to 1897, gives dimensions of 83.5 × 100.4 cm and indicates the Claude Monet signature as well as the date 97 at the bottom left.

Provenance02

From Monet to Durand-Ruel in 1919

The Durand-Ruel gallery acquired the work from the artist in 1919. She then joined Cornelius Vanderbilt Barton, then Grace Underwood Barton, who bequeathed it to the Brooklyn Museum in 1968.

2020 sale03

A painting donated to support the collections

The Brooklyn Museum entrusts the painting to Sotheby's in the October 28, 2020 sale. The notice presents it as lot 120, sold to support the museum's collections.
