The Japanese Bridge, Marmottan W1924hand painted reproduction

The bridge arch is almost engulfed by purple-brown, green and red material. A yellow light bursts in the upper left corner, while the right side remains closed by blue-black verticals. In this late version, Giverny's familiar motif is no longer described: it emerges in densities, key directions and temperature contrasts.

Look at the work

The bridge remains like a dark curve in the middle of a garden that has become material

The upper edge concentrates the warmest colors. Yellow, orange and light green open the left corner, then are absorbed by red browns and purples. Below, the bridge forms a wide, almost horizontal curved band. Its railing and apron merge with the branches, but several lighter lines maintain the arch.

Under the bridge, the water is painted with short, dark markings, mixing olive green, burgundy and blue. The right side descends into long purple-black verticals which close the space. A few yellow and red accents placed near the edges prevent the canvas from reducing to a dark mass and circulate an interior light.

The recognition of the bridge arises less from a design than from a resistance: a dark curve still stands in the middle of vertical thrusts and thick colors.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

Analysis of The Japanese Bridge, Marmottan W1924 - Claude Monet
01

An arch almost absorbed by vegetation

The shape of the bridge must remain perceptible without being redesigned. Its contours are constructed by changes of direction and temperature among browns and greens.

02

Warm light concentrated in a single angle

The yellow of the top left is the main bright focus. Its contrast with the purples on the right side organizes the entire canvas and must maintain its intensity without whitening.

03

A long, thick and contradictory late touch

Verticals, curves and small horizontals partially overlap. Keeping their directions distinct restores the tension of this late painting.

The dark arch beneath the reds and purplesThe native detail shows the layering of keys on deck and in the water. Greens, burgundy and blues remain visible separately even in the darkest areas.

The best native occurrence found of this exact version measures 755 × 655 px; it has been preserved without enlargement. The actual view of the room measures 1000 × 900 px and the native detail 560 × 520 px. All three files were encoded and verified as true decodable WebPs.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

These facts concern this precise version and are verified from the notice of the institution which keeps it.

Identification01

Marmottan 5091, Wildenstein 1924

This unsigned oil on canvas, painted between 1918 and 1924, measures 89 × 100 cm. It belongs to the Marmottan Monet Museum under number 5091 and corresponds to number 1924 of the Wildenstein catalog raisonné.

Pattern transformed02

From the descriptive bridge to an almost abstract vision

Monet represents the Giverny footbridge from the 1890s. In its latest versions, the arch remains recognizable but vegetation, light and pictorial material invade the structure until removing any stable separation between object and atmosphere.

Collection03

One of the last Japanese bridges in the Michel Monet collection

The Marmottan Monet Museum is the only place to preserve this exceptional set of last Japanese Bridges. Canvas 5091 entered its collections with the legacy of Michel Monet in 1966.
