A narrow path cuts through a profusion of purple irises and leads to Monet's house. Painted in 1900, this view does not describe a well-ordered garden: it gives the impression of moving forward under the trees, among the flowers, in a light crossed by red, purple and green.

Look at the work

The alley opens a gap in the irises up to the pink facade of Giverny

The path starts from the lower right edge, narrows in the center then goes back towards the house. This diagonal prevents the iris mass from appearing as a simple tapestry. The purple flowers occupy almost the entire lower half, while the trees form a darker vault above.

The pink facade, slightly off-center, remains small but essential. It gives depth to the scene and responds to the reds scattered in the foliage. The greens are never uniform: olive, emerald, blue green and yellow overlap depending on the shadow or light.

Monet does not place the viewer in front of his garden: the path, the flowerbeds and the branches physically bring him into the color.

A perspective drawn by the path

The strip of ocher earth narrows towards the house and organizes the depth. It must remain visible without becoming a rigid or too light line in the middle of the irises.

An iris mat without mechanical repetition

The flowers are indicated by small touches of purple, blue, pink and white. Their density varies; repeating them regularly would lose the impression of natural growth.

A shadow rich in color

The upper trees mix greens, reds, blues and browns. Darkening them with black would close the vault and remove the light breakthroughs around the house.

RF 1983 6 and Wildenstein 1624

The Musée d'Orsay dates this oil on canvas to 1900. It measures 81.6 × 92.6 cm, or 101.5 × 113 cm with its frame, and bears a signature dated lower right: Claude Monet 1900.

Historical title02

Presented as The Irises in 1928

The painting then belonged to the Laffon collection. Offered at the Hôtel Drouot under the title Les iris, it was withdrawn from sale before entering Durand-Ruel the following year.

Entrance to the museum03

A donation accepted in 1983

Durand-Ruel acquired the work on May 15, 1929. It was then accepted by the French State as a donation and awarded to the Musée d'Orsay in 1983.
