Jean Monet rests in an oval cradle trimmed with a floral blue fabric. On the right, Camille leans towards him, seen in profile and almost from behind; above, a long suspended curtain forms a canopy which crosses the entire height of the canvas. Monet paints this family intimacy with large visible touches, contrasting the warm whites of the infant, the floral blues of the cradle and the dark dress of the mother.
Look at the work
The infant appears in the lower part, swaddled in white. He holds a circular toy with an orange handle; a yellow and pink reel rests on the cover. The edge of the cradle, its red ribbons and its blue fabric with small flowers build a very material setting.
Camille occupies the right edge on a wooden chair. Her white headdress, collar and black striped dress contrast with the light cradle. The knotted canopy at the top unfolds in soft diagonals, while the brown bed on the left and the beige wall close the bedroom.
The vast floral fabric not only serves as a setting: it guides the mother's gaze towards the child and gives its vertical rhythm to the entire scene.
Composition, touch and light
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.
The cradle is observed slightly from above, as if standing next to Camille. This position makes the baby's face, toys and oval interior visible, while maintaining the mother's attentive profile.
The folds of the canopy produce large diagonals while Camille and Jean remain almost motionless. Irregularly repeated floral patterns circulate reds, greens and blues throughout.
The walls, chair and dress are laid with wide brush strokes. This visible material avoids the smooth finish of the official portrait and gives the image the immediate presence of an observed moment.

The image freely distributed by the National Gallery of Art corresponds to inventory 1983.1.25 and Wildenstein number 101. Its available native definition of 1,686 × 2,200 px has been preserved in WebP without oversampling.
Cream, gray blue, pink and a few greens shape the linen. A uniform white would remove the volume of the swaddled body and the reflections of the floral fabric.
Bouquets, leaves and small spots do not follow a regular repetition. They must fit the folds and sometimes disappear into the shadows to preserve the flexibility of the textile.
Her face in profile is not very detailed, but the tilt of her head expresses attention. The contrast of her dark dress should frame the child rather than look away.
Documented benchmarks
Painted in 1867, this oil on canvas measures 116.2 × 88.8 cm. It is kept at the National Gallery of Art under the 1983.1.25 inventory and listed as Wildenstein 101.
The painting represents the first son of Claude Monet and Camille Doncieux still an infant. The mother sits at her bedside, in a domestic scene whose large format gives an exceptional presence to the cradle.
The National Gallery of Art retains this descriptive title and recalls that the work was also exhibited like Jean Monet in his cradle. The reference Wildenstein 101 identifies this version.
Passed through the collection of Doctor Georges de Bellio then by several European and American owners, the work was acquired by Paul Mellon in 1965. He offered it to the National Gallery of Art in 1983.
