Look at the work

Two boys become accents of color in a vertical landscape of trunks and reflections

Poplars climb from the bank to the upper edge and divide the canvas into long strips. The two figures, small and placed near the water, serve as a ladder; they are not isolated by a clear outline and remain linked to the greens, blues and ochres of the undergrowth.

The river takes on the vertical shapes of the trees in freer touches. Earth, foliage and water interpenetrate, so that the edge of the bank must be sought rather than immediately read.

The portrait of the children is not separated from the landscape: their discreet presence measures the height of the trees and the silence of the bank.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A natural grid made by poplars

The light and dark trunks punctuate the entire width. Their irregular deviations avoid symmetry and lead the eye of the figures towards the wooded depth.

02

Characters integrated by color

Clothes and faces remain suggested by a few accents. Too much detail would move them forward as the subjects of a genre scene and reduce the scale of the landscape.

03

The Epte valley around Giverny

The Canadian file places the origin of the work in Giverny, in Eure. Monet then explored the meadows, banks and poplars near his house, before his major series of the 1890s.

Reference image

Read this specific version

Only one exact image of W1127 is used. The real WebP measures 2500 × 1973 px and retains the native definition of the source, without artificial enlargement.

Composition01

Preserve the small size of the two boys

They must remain recognizable without dominating the bank. Their scale reveals the height of the poplars and the density of the vegetation.

Color02

Hold verticals down to water

The reflections extend the trunks without copying them exactly. Softer, more fragmented touches distinguish the river from the real trees.

Matter03

Keep the passages warm in the middle of the greens

Ochres, pinks and browns light up the bank and the figures. They prevent the undergrowth from becoming monochrome and organize the points of attention.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

The Government of Canada documents Jean-Pierre Hoschedé and Michel Monet on the banks of the Epte, oil on canvas circa 1887 -1890, 76 × 96.5 cm, inventory 38089 at the National Gallery of Canada.

Models01

Jean-Pierre Hoschedé and Michel Monet

The two boys belong to the family gathered around Claude Monet and Alice Hoschedé in Giverny. Their presence gives the landscape a daily dimension without transforming it into an official portrait.

Location02

The Epte river near Giverny

The Canadian notice indicates Giverny as the place of origin. The wet banks, trees and their reflections announce the research that Monet will develop around water.

Dating03

A conservative range: around 1887 -1890

The museum retains this dating rather than a single year. The file therefore retains the institutional range instead of imposing a more precise, uninsured date.
