Two boys become accents of color in a vertical landscape of trunks and reflections

Poplars climb from the bank to the upper edge and divide the canvas into long strips. The two figures, small and placed near the water, serve as a ladder; they are not isolated by a clear outline and remain linked to the greens, blues and ochres of the undergrowth.

The river takes on the vertical shapes of the trees in freer touches. Earth, foliage and water interpenetrate, so that the edge of the bank must be sought rather than immediately read.

The portrait of the children is not separated from the landscape: their discreet presence measures the height of the trees and the silence of the bank.

The Canadian file places the origin of the work in Giverny, in Eure. Monet then explored the meadows, banks and poplars near his house, before his major series of the 1890s.
