Claude Monet · The port of Le Havre lit by the rising sun · J. Paul Getty Museum
A sailboat with blue sails glides in the foreground while a boat loaded with silhouettes passes to the right. Behind them, liners, masts and smoke dissolve in a blue-purple mist. In the spring of 1873, Monet brought out an orange light in the middle of the humidity of the port of Le Havre, in a navy very close to the research of Impression, soleil levant.

Look at the work
The central boat advances sideways, its clear hull and triangular sails cut out of the water. On the right, the black boat carries several passengers reduced to vertical accents. The difference in scale between these two boats and the large ships at the bottom hollows out the basin.
The sun remains cloudy, but its oranges and roses appear in the sky then descend in a column of touches on the water. Around, blues, greens and purples mingle with industrial smoke, fog and reflections.
The sun does not illuminate objects separately: its color passes through humid air and water, until it becomes the luminous axis of the entire composition.
Composition, touch and light
Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.
Ships, chimneys and distant masts are more or less visible depending on their depth in the mist. Monet suggests industrial activity without describing each building.
The complementary contrast immediately focuses the eye on the sun and its reflection. Warm touches remain rare, surrounded by a very nuanced cold range.
The sky receives wide and melted passages; the water is constructed in short, horizontal or oblique lines. This distinction simultaneously restores the humidity of the air and the lapping of the pool.
Reference image
The visual corresponds to Sunrise (Navy), or Sunrise (Navy), Getty inventory 98.PA.164 and Wildenstein catalog 262. The unique WebP measures 3,000 × 2,440 px, obtained since Google Art Project digitization without artificial enlargement.
Its disk is not a clean circle. Roses, yellows and grays pass through it and attach it to the humid sky.
Blue gray, lavender, cool white and darker touches give them transparency. Lightening them evenly would detach them too much from the port.
Masts, chimneys and smoke emerge in fragments. Their low contrast is essential to maintain atmospheric depth.
Documented benchmarks
Painted in March or April 1873, this oil on canvas measures 50.2 × 61 cm. It is kept at the J. Paul Getty Museum under inventory 98.PA.164 and listed as Wildenstein 262.
Since childhood, Monet has known the pools, liners and sailboats of Le Havre. The Getty here identifies their silhouettes through the smoke and humid morning air.
Getty documentation places the performance in March or April, in the period immediately close to the works that led to the first Impressionist exhibition of 1874.
Both canvases show the port in the morning and use warm light in a cold atmosphere. This version is distinguished by the central tall ship and the column of golden reflections.

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.
