Look at the work

Thatched roofs placed on the side of the hill

Three main houses line up in the center. Their thick roofs descend diagonally brown and green, interrupted by small chimneys. The white, blue or gray walls are surrounded by dark lines and partially hidden by fences.

The green slope occupies almost the entire foreground; yellow and light touches outline herbs and flowers. Behind the houses, the hill takes up the same oblique movement, while white smoke bends in the turquoise sky.

The cottages seem to belong to the relief: their inclined roofs extend the slopes and their colors mingle with those of the fields.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The work ʻonds-9117 can be recognized by its row of white houses, the large inclined meadow, the green hill and the plumes of smoke against a blue sky.

01

Diagonals that unite everything

The slope, roofs and long touches of grass follow nearby angles. Van Gogh thus gives rhythmic coherence to the entire landscape.

02

Thatch rendered by streaks

The covers are not flat brown. Green, yellow, blue and black are superimposed on them in tight lines to reflect their thickness.

03

Smoke against the sky

Two white and gray-blue masses rise above the chimneys. Their flexible curves interrupt the oblique lines of the terrain.

What the painter must preserve

The painter must respect the sequence of roofs, the slope of the land and the key directions which differentiate thatch, walls, grass and sky.

  • Thatched roofs streaked with green and brown
  • Light walls bordered by dark blue lines
  • The large inclined meadow punctuated with yellow touches
  • White smoke on the turquoise sky
