Claude Monet · Camille Doncieux in large portrait of Salon · Kunsthalle in Bremen

Camille or The Woman in the Green Dress W65hand painted reproduction

Camille Doncieux turns around slightly, her face in profile and her hands drawn towards the collar of her jacket. Her green and black silk dress widens into a long train which occupies the entire bottom of the painting. Monet adopts the monumental format of the ceremonial portrait, but the posture taken in motion, the look averted and the modernity of the clothing give the figure a new presence.

Look at the work

An almost moving silhouette renews the full-length portrait

Camille is shown with three quarters of her back, as if she had just pivoted. Her face stands out against a very dark brown background, while a small black hat decorated with feathers holds the hair. Gloved or lit hands near the collar concentrate the gesture in the upper part.

The black velvet jacket lined with fur forms a short mass above the skirt. This alternates wide emerald green and black bands which follow the volume then spread to the left in a train. The beige parquet floor, painted in perspective, gives the life-size scale of the figure.

Clothing is not an accessory: its bands, its train and its materials build the pose as much as the face and transform Camille into a modern appearance.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A turned pose rather than a frontal one

The back, raised shoulder and face in profile suggest a suspended movement. This twist avoids the official frontality of the ceremonial portrait and produces an instantly recognizable silhouette.

02

Green modulated by black

The emerald bands of the skirt change from almost pure green to dark blue areas depending on the folds. The black bands are not flat: they reflect brown, blue and green glows that give the fabric its weight.

03

A figure isolated by a sober background

The brown curtain has almost no narrative objects. Its warm variations bring out the green and the face, while the light ground under the train prevents the dress from being lost entirely in the shadows.

Read this specific version

The visual shows Camille, known as The Woman in the Green Dress, inventory 298-1906/1 of the Kunsthalle Bremen and Wildenstein number 65. The image of 1,947 × 3,000 px is presented at its native definition in a real WebP.

Composition01

The train determines the silhouette

Its edge starts from the body then slides widely to the left. Respect its length, its angle and the alternation of bands is essential to maintain the majesty of the format.

Color02

The face remains seen in profile

Camille looks neither at the painter nor at the viewer. The line of the nose, the inclined chin and the shadow of the hair must preserve this distance without hardening the features.

Matter03

Fur, velvet and silk do not shine in the same way

The fur receives short, matte touches, the jacket absorbs light and the silk of the skirt produces sharper passages. Their differentiation gives the portrait its tactile richness.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

Signed and dated 1866, this oil on canvas measures 231 × 151 cm. It is kept at the Kunsthalle Bremen under inventory 298-1906/1 and listed as Wildenstein 65.

Realization01

A quick solution for the Show

Monet understood at the beginning of 1866 that he would not finish his great Luncheon on the Grass in time. He then painted Camille in full-length portrait in order to have an ambitious work for the Salon of the same year.

Reception02

A success noted by Émile Zola

Accepted at the Salon of 1866, the canvas received a favorable reception. Émile Zola praises the freshness of the painting; the format reserved for sovereigns, the aristocracy and the upper bourgeoisie applied to the painter's companion appears particularly daring.

Museum03

Acquired in Bremen in 1906

The Kunsthalle Bremen acquired the work in 1906 under the direction of Gustav Pauli, with the support of Galerieverein. It remains one of the great French portraits in the collection and is exhibited under the title Camille.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • Respect the life-size scale and twist of the body.
  • Maintain irregular alternation of green and black bands.
  • Differentiate between silk, velvet, fur and parquet.
  • Maintain the face in a diverted profile in measured light.

Presentation in your interior

A palette designed with the room

This monumental portrait becomes a focal point in an entrance, a high-ceilinged living room or a stairwell. A patinated black, dark gold or walnut frame accompanies the brown background; an ivory, deep green or old pink wall reveals the dress.
