The woman looks to the left. His cap forms a large black mass at the top of the canvas; the forehead, nose, lips and chin emerge through faint brown and pink passages.
The background changes from light yellow-green on the left to colder greens behind the shoulder. The jacket remains almost black, so that the edge of the face and neck concentrates the entire light transition.

The museum describes this study as research into a "darkness that remains color". Van Gogh does not uncover the shadows: he mixes Prussian blue, brown, green and some pink accents.

Its square and very dark shape occupies the top of the portrait. However, a few differences in brown and blue allow us to perceive the edge and folds.

The profile is constructed by small gaps
The nose, mouth and chin are never circled with a light line. They become visible thanks to the transitions between warm browns, black greens and small pink touches.

The background makes the backlight sensitive
The lightest yellow greens are in front of the face. They evolve towards a darker blue-green near the shoulder and reinforce the silhouette without theatrical effect.
