The chalk cliff fills the left half and is hollowed out by an arch which frames two distant sails. At low tide, dark rocks emerge from green water streaked with light. The sun descends behind the Gate Upstream and transforms the white stone into layers of pink, gray and ocher.

A monumental arch cuts out the sea and the sunset

The cliff arrives from the upper edge and descends in heavy horizontal strata. Its irregular opening, placed slightly to the left of the center, reveals a strip of pink sky and two small red and white sails.

Under the arch, a rocky outcrop advances to the right and forms an almost black mass. The water in the foreground mixes deep greens with cream bands. A few isolated rocks and their reflections prevent the surface from becoming decorative.

Monet places the viewer at the foot of the cliff: the arch becomes at the same time a natural monument, a window and an immense mass of damp stone.

A backlight that reverses the expected values

Chalk is not uniformly white. Seen facing the sunset, it is charged with gray, brown and pink, while the sky visible in the arch appears brighter.

An off-center arch as a passage

The opening focuses the eye without being in the exact middle. The two tiny sails give the scale of the cliff and extend the depth towards the sea.

Horizontal lines in the rock

Monet follows the geological strata with long touches of gray and cream. They give volume to the wall while contrasting with the more vertical reflections of the water.

The setting sky and some warm reflections balance the greens of the water and the very dark browns of the rocks.

The Porte d'Amont at the northeast end of the beach

This natural arch closes one side of Étretat Bay. Monet observes it from the shore, at low tide, in a direction which places the cliff in front of the descending sun.

A first confrontation with Étretat

The painting belongs to the early days of Monet's career, long before his intensive campaigns in the 1880s on the same coast. The painter is already interested in the transformations of chalk under precise light.

A work from the Fogg Museum

The 1957.163 inventory distinguishes this version from the numerous cliffs of Étretat painted by Monet. The format, position of the sails and backlit lighting make it an autonomous composition.
