À propos de l’œuvre

Baigneurs à la Grenouillère, par Claude Monet

Claude Monet · Canoes, footbridge and swimming on the Seine · National Gallery

Bathers in La Grenouillère W135hand painted reproduction

Nine canoes occupy the foreground and lead to a thin footbridge where visitors circulate. Behind, bathers punctuate the brilliant water while the bank remains under the trees. Monet quickly paints a scene of modern leisure, without ordering his figures according to the conventions of a historical painting.

Look at the work

The boats bring the viewer closer to swimming

The green, brown and black hulls overlap two-thirds of the width. Their bows point towards the horizontal walkway which almost cuts the canvas in two. This very low view gives the impression of looking from another boat.

On the left, two women in light dresses pass in front of the shore buildings. On the right, bathers are reduced to pink, blue and dark touches. The trees close the top of the painting, except in the right corner where the Seine clears and recedes.

The footbridge blocks a classic entrance into the landscape; on the contrary, the canoes, figures and reflections impose an immediate experience of the place.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A foreground filled with canoes

Their size and overlaps give concrete depth without academic vanishing lines. Thick contours remain essential to their readability.

02

A footbridge as a large horizontal

It crosses the composition just above the middle and separates the boats from the bathers. The vertical characters interrupt the rhythm.

03

Quick touches for crowds and water

Monet blocks the silhouettes with a few accents and juxtaposes light or dark bands on the Seine. Speed preserves the animation of the scene.

Read this specific version

The unique reference corresponds to the National Gallery's NG6456 inventory, Wildenstein version 135. The high definition file was reduced without enlargement to 3000 × 2384 px, then converted to WebP.

Composition01

The nine canoes do not form a regular row

Their angles, colors and spacing change. This variety avoids mechanical construction of the foreground.

Color02

Most of the water remains in the shadows

The light reflections are all the more vivid as they emerge from deep greens and blues under the trees.

Matter03

Bathers are almost colorful signs

Their small scale and summary design belong to the general effect. Detailing them excessively would weaken the impression of movement.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

Painted in 1869, this oil on canvas measuring 73 × 92 cm is kept at the National Gallery under the NG6456 inventory and classified Wildenstein 135.

Location01

A leisure establishment twelve kilometers from Paris

La Grenouillère offered swimming, boating, fishing, dining and dancing. The railway from Saint-Lazare station made it a weekend destination accessible to a variety of audiences.

Shared work02

Monet and Renoir paint side by side

During the summer of 1869, the two artists studied the same banks and the same visitors. The National Gallery has six paintings of the site created between them during this campaign.

Study03

A pochade for a more ambitious project

Monet cites his sketches of La Grenouillère in a letter to Frédéric Bazille dated September 25, 1869. The canvas, worked quickly on site and left open in places, nevertheless has the autonomy of a founding painting of impressionism.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • Keep the nine canoes and their overlaps in the foreground.
  • Maintain the horizontal walkway and its small figures.
  • Treat bathers with brief touches rather than detailed outlines.
  • Vibrate light reflections on mostly dark water.

Presentation in your interior

A palette designed with the room

This lively scene matches a living room, office or house close to the water. A bottle green, dark brown or natural wood frame accompanies the boats and the shore while letting the silver reflections stand out.
