Look at the work

Arles Park on the eve of departure

In the spring of 1889, Van Gogh returned to the public park of Arles which he had already painted the previous autumn. The path occupies the lower half of the canvas and leads to a group of figures; on either side, the dark trunks form one corridor under a vault of green foliage punctuated with red flowers.

The perspective is readable, but the painting never becomes descriptive in the academic sense. Along the way, short touches of yellow, cream, blue and pink come together like a mosaic; in the trees, red and white accents break up the greens and reflect the flowering.

The familiar walk becomes a study of filtered light: the path leads the eye, while the foliage transforms the space into a colorful vault.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

This scene is based on the depth of the path, the vertical rhythm of the trunks and the controlled dispersion of reds in the crown of the trees.

01

A deep driveway

The edges of the path converge towards walkers and gradually reduce the scale of the figures. The perspective must remain clear under the abundance of the touch.

02

A vault of foliage

The green masses meet above the driveway without forming a uniform ceiling. Blue, cream and yellow openings let the light breathe.

03

The red flowers

The red accents are scattered throughout the foliage, with some echoes in the clothing. Their rarity gives them all their chromatic weight.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The difficulty is to maintain the readability of the path and the walkers while restoring the almost continuous vibration of the small touches.

  • The convergence of the aisle and the decreasing scale of the figures
  • The irregular rhythm of the trunks on both sides
  • The mosaic of yellows, blues and creams in the path
  • The red flowers distributed without overload in the foliage
  • The passages of sky and light between the branches

A rich but balanced spring landscape

The horizontal format is suitable above a sofa, sideboard or desk. The deep greens and yellows of the path provide warmth, while the reds give small accent points.
