At noon, the portal and the Albane Tower receive a warmer light than in the morning effects. The Gothic reliefs consist of ochres, pinks, blues and greens, while a purple shadow descends on the lower part. The facade remains monumental, but each stone seems to vibrate under the touch.

Look at the work

The portal and the Albane tower at noon, between golden heat and purple shadow

Albane Tower dominates the left side and the portal opens in the lower half. The framing cuts the building on all edges, bringing the facade closer together until it becomes an almost tactile surface. The large vertical lines remain visible, but they are continually interrupted by sculptures and plays of light.

The upper parts are crossed in yellow, pink and light blue. Further down, purples and blue-green deepen the portals. Monet does not clearly separate light and shadow: he circulates warm accents in cold areas and vice versa.

W1350 captures less of an exact hour than a moving relationship between the heat of the south, the Gothic mass and the shadow that reaches the portal.

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

The Albane Tower gives its asymmetry to the framing

Its mass rises to the left while the main portal draws the eye lower and towards the center. This organization avoids a perfectly balanced frontality and gives the monument an upward tension.

Midday doesn't erase the colors of shadow

Warm light reveals ochres and pinks, but the hollows remain colored blue, green and purple. For faithful reproduction, these shadows must retain their chromatic transparency and not be reduced to brown or black.

A final statement signed in 1894

The Pushkin Museum file notes the signature and date "Claude Monet 94". Like the other paintings in the series, the work results from observations facing the monument then from repetitions intended to adjust the general agreement.

The portals provide anchor points in the lower part. Above, the floors of sculptures and arcatures tighten, guiding the eye towards the tower without drawing every detail.

Golden, pink, blue green and purple ocher

Warm tones dominate sun-stricken reliefs. Blue greens and purples give weight to the shade, while reappearing in small touches in the bright area.

Matter03

Short impasto for a vibrant stone

The key constantly changes direction to follow niches, columns and arches. The reliefs must not become regular: their irregularity circulates light and maintains pictorial unity.

The painting is an oil on canvas from 1894 measuring 101 × 65 cm. It is signed and dated lower left and bears the inventory number 0-3313 in the museum collection.

Provenance02

Former Sergei Shchukin collection

The work belonged to the great Moscow collector Sergei Shchukin. It entered the Pushkin Museum in 1948, after its passage into public collections resulting from the nationalization of this ensemble.

The Albane Portal and Tower

Monet varies the framing, time and light slightly from one canvas to another. The number W1350 identifies here the so-called midday version; its dimensions, its origin and its inventory separate it from other facades preserved in Paris, Los Angeles or Boston.
