Shrimp and mussels, F256Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

Six red shrimp mingle with blue-black mussels, algae and a few light fragments. The small format is painted with a quick gesture: antennae, shells and legs remain readable in the middle of a very free material.

Look at the work

A seafood meal becomes a color study painted on the first try

The shrimp form a red diagonal from the upper center to the lower left edge. The mussels, heavier and darker, are distributed around them and stabilize the composition.

Green, pink and brown touches suggest algae and support. The long antennae cross these areas in fine lines, giving movement to a still life without containers or horizons.

Shrimp and mussels F256/JH1169 is a 26.5 × 34.8 cm oil on canvas painted in Paris between September and November 1886. The Van Gogh Museum preserves it under the inventory s0122V1962.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

Van Gogh combines the orange-red of the crustaceans with the gray blue of the shells, then enlivens the background with greens and pinks placed very quickly.

01

Red organizes the whole group

The curved bodies of the shrimp form a central chain. Their claws and antennae extend this movement into the margins.

02

The mussels introduce cold accents

The blue-black of the shells contrasts with the reds and receives some light gray reflections which indicate the smooth surface.

03

The painting maintains the speed of the gesture

A layer of medium applied to the canvas made it easier to slip in the fresh touches, a feature studied by the Van Gogh Museum.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

F256/JH1169, the format of 26.5 × 34.8 cm and the inventory s0122V1962 identify this small Parisian still life from the Van Gogh Museum.

Subject

Six shrimp and nine mussels

Van Gogh chooses everyday products rather than a bouquet and observes their differences in color, shell and shell.

Testimony

A work later mentioned by Gauguin

Paul Gauguin remembers this little painting and says that Van Gogh sold it for five francs before giving the money to a destitute young woman.

Technique

Quick execution on an oiled surface

The technical study reveals a layer of medium under the paint, allowing wet touches to slide and blend flexibly.
