Les Peupliers, autumn W1311hand painted reproduction

On the right, the pale trunks rise under a blue-green crown; on the left, the row recedes into a dark curve. The water takes on the reds, purples and greens of autumn. This oil on canvas measuring 80 × 92 cm corresponds to Wildenstein 1311.

Look at the work

A row of poplars that folds into the autumn landscape

Monet places the nearest trees against the right edge and lowers their trunks to the water. The line of the peaks then lowers to the left, creating a depth without path or architecture. The gaze follows this curve before returning through reflections.

The foliage is not uniformly green: Prussian blue, mauve, cold gray and a few yellow flashes mingle with the red browns of the bank. The illuminated trunks become almost cream, while their doubles in the Epte fragment into vertical touches.

W1311 constructs depth by two opposite movements: the trees move back to the left and their reflections bring the gaze back to the foreground.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

The Wildenstein 1311 horizontal version

The 80 × 92 cm format and the mass of trees grouped on the right distinguish this painting from the vertical versions of the series and the four almost frontal trees of the Metropolitan Museum.

02

A series painted from Epte

In 1891, Monet worked near Limetz, upstream of Giverny, from a converted boat. The same poplars are studied under different lights and seasons, without becoming a repetitive motif.

03

A work that remains in private collection

The painting is documented as a private collection. It was nevertheless shown to the public during the exhibition The Impressionists in private at the Marmottan Monet Museum in 2014.

Reference image

Read this specific version

Only one image is used: the exact reproduction of W1311 in real WebP of 1593 × 1386 px, preserved at its native resolution without artificial enlargement.

Composition01

A high off-center mass

The dark crown should not be refocused: its weight on the right precisely balances the large clear sky that opens to the left.

Color02

Cooled autumn colors

The reds of the bank remain mixed with purple and blue. This restraint avoids an overly decorative orange autumn and retains the humid light of the Epte.

Matter03

Vertical but discontinuous reflections

In water, the trunks dissolve into cream, mauve and red segments. Faithful reproduction keeps these breaks instead of drawing continuous lines.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

The catalog raisonné identifies this painting from 1891 under the number Wildenstein 1311: oil on canvas, 80 × 92 cm, today in private collection.

Identification01

Les Peupliers, autumn, W1311

The French title, the horizontal format and the curve of the trees allow this version to be separated from the other states of the Poplars series.

Series02

Twenty-three paintings listed in 1891

Numbers W1291 to W1313 follow variations of the row of trees along the Epte, from views with monumental trunks to compositions more open to the marsh.

Exposure03

Marmottan Monet Museum, 2014

Although kept in a private collection, the work appeared in a Parisian exhibition dedicated to rarely accessible impressionist masterpieces.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • The exact Wildenstein version 1311, dated 1891
  • The original horizontal format of 80 × 92 cm
  • The curve of the peaks which descends to the left
  • Red, mauve and cream reflections without rigid contours

Presentation in your interior

A palette designed with the room

Its bluish greens, muted reds and pearly sky are suitable for a quiet living room, library or bedroom. Medium wood, ecru linen and a few plum accents extend its palette without darkening the water.
