Look at the work

A monumental trio of rocks under a covered light

The largest rock occupies the center and almost cuts the horizon line. Two more distant formations frame it. Unlike the other two close versions of the pattern, W1095 eliminates the side rocks of the foreground.

The shadows of the stone combine brown, purple, gray and green. Reddish passages appear near the water. The sea remains lighter, with open touches of blue, green and white which sometimes reveal the preparation.

The relative calm of the sea makes the rocks more massive: instead of dissolving them in the storm, Monet studies their facets, colors and anchoring in the water.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A tight framing on the central rock

The main mass dominates the canvas and its edges almost extend out of the available space, giving the pattern a monumental presence.

02

A gray light that reveals color

The overcast sky reduces lighting contrasts but reveals the purples, greens and reds contained in the stone.

03

A paint constructed wet on wet

The Art Institute's technical study observes numerous mixtures in the fresh layer and rapid execution around a summary placement.

Read this specific version

The Art Institute of Chicago IIIF file has been converted into a true WebP of 3,000 × 2,401 px. High definition allows you to read the open matter and nuances of the rock.

Composition01

Keep the central rock very dominant

Its width and height distinguish W1095 from other views near Port-Goulphar.

Color02

Preserve visible preparation areas

The small intervals between the keys contribute to surface breathing and should not be filled.

Matter03

Keep the red-brown reflections at the base

They connect the color of the rock to the water and give weight to the central formation.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

The Art Institute of Chicago documents Rocks at Port-Goulphar, Belle-Île, oil on canvas from 1886, 66 × 81.8 cm, signed Claude Monet 86, inventory 1964.210 and catalog Wildenstein 1095.

Series01

The third in a trio dedicated to the same rocky group

W1093, W1094 and W1095 take over Port-Goulphar under different conditions; the Chicago version shows overcast weather and tighter framing.

Support02

A French portrait canvas no. 25

The analysis of the threads brings its fabric closer to two paintings by Étretat kept at the same museum, probably coming from the same scroll.

Pigments03

A palette identified by the scientific study

Lead white, cadmium and chromium yellows, vermilion, red lacquer, emerald green, viridian, cobalt blue and ultramarine were detected.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • The Wildenstein 1095 version
  • The tight framing on the rocky trio
  • The light covered
  • The purples and reds of the stone
