Vincent van Gogh · August -September 1883 · The Hague, Netherlands

Wood edge, F192Reproduction of oil painting on canvas

On the edge of a wood, a clear path curves between tall trunks before disappearing into the shadows. Van Gogh constructs this solitary atmosphere with deep greens, warm lands and pale light filtered by the trees.

Look at the work

A path opens a silent clearing

The left part forms a dark wall of tight trunks. In the center, the beige path curves then divides around the trees, while a strip of green meadow illuminates the foreground on the right.

Foliage is almost never described leaf by leaf. Large olive and black-green masses envelop the trunks; at the bottom, a cream opening makes the composition breathe.

Edge of a Wood F192/JH184 is an oil on canvas of 33.8 × 48.5 cm painted in The Hague in August - September 1883. It is kept at the Kroeller-Müller Museum under number KM 109.023.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The museum has established a dating from August to September 1883, more recent than that retained in certain old catalogs. The composition was also reworked by Van Gogh during his execution.

01

The path draws depth

Its clear curve starts from the lower left edge and sinks between the trunks. It guides the gaze without a rigid vanishing point.

02

Verticals form a rhythm

Trunks change thickness and spacing. The closest ones are dark and massive; the most distant ones become thin and blend into the light.

03

The material remains visible

Direct photography of the work shows streaks, impasto and repetitions. The terrain and bark exist as much through material as through color.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

The instructions from the Kroeller-Müller Museum give 33.8 × 48.5 cm, an oil on canvas and the inventory KM 109.023. Historical references F192/JH184 link this same work to the catalogs raisonnés.

Museum

Helene Kroeller-Müller's first Van Gogh

This edge was the first Van Gogh painting acquired by the collector. It inaugurates an ensemble that has become one of the most important in the world.

Revision

A tree removed, a path straightened

Material study shows that a second trunk first occupied the left foreground. Van Gogh removed it and simplified a section of the path to calm the composition.

Outdoors

A canvas painted from an easel

Van Gogh then just bought a country easel. The slightly higher viewpoint allows him to order the ground, path and trunks without working on his knees.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy should keep the path curve clear, the screen dark to the left, the irregular trunk spacing, the green meadow and the thick streaks visible in the ground.

  • The beige path that curves towards the bottom
  • The dark, dense mass on the left
  • Vertical trunks of different widths
  • The bright green clearing in the foreground
  • The bright opening behind the trees
