À propos de l’œuvre

Champ aux meules de blé, par Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh · July 1890 · Auvers-sur-Oise, France

Field with wheat stacksReproduction of oil painting on canvas

Large yellow millstones emerge from a green field under a sky streaked with blue and white. In this format twice as wide as it is high, Van Gogh brings the viewer closer to the material of the crops and stretches the landscape to the edges of the canvas.

Look at the work

Monumental millstones in a moving field

The masses of cut wheat are not aligned like isolated objects. They overlap, hollow out and form an irregular chain that occupies almost the entire panorama. Their dark contours retain the yellows, ochres and greens applied in long curves.

In the foreground, green plants rise in tight arabesques. The horizon, very high and very thin, barely reveals a few trees before the purplish-blue sky. The horizontal touches of the clouds respond to the flexible lines of the millstones without immobilizing them.

Van Gogh transforms the crops into living relief: each millstone seems shaped by the wind, the light and the path of the brush.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The Fondation Beyeler canvas can be recognized by its double square format, its large chained millstones and the thin strip of streaked blue sky.

01

The double square format

The canvas measures exactly 50 × 100 cm. This unusual width allows the pattern to continue sideways and gives a feeling of space without a single focal point.

02

Sculpting contours

The blue-black lines surround the millstones, then fold inside their volumes. They give a firm structure to a material that is nevertheless very moving.

03

Yellow versus blue

Golden crops occupy the center and vibrate against the cold sky. The greens in the foreground ensure the transition between these two color families.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The reproduction must retain the panoramic width, the dark contours of the millstones and the difference in rhythm between the curves of the field and the streaks of the sky.

  • The irregular succession of large yellow millstones
  • The blue-black lines which dig and structure the volumes
  • The green and light arabesques in the foreground
  • The purplish-blue sky constructed in horizontal bands
