Châtaigniers en fleurs, par Vincent van Gogh

Vincent van Gogh · May 1890 · Auvers-sur-Oise, France

Chestnut trees in bloomReproduction of oil painting on canvas

An immense chestnut tree in bloom fills almost the entire canvas and throws the rue d'Auvers into a narrow strip of light. Under its yellow-green crown, a few walkers and houses give the scale of this monumental tree.

Look at the work

The tree becomes the true monument of the village

The trunk stands on the right then divides into large dark branches. The rounded crown touches the upper and side edges; its thousands of small green, yellow and orange touches almost make the sky disappear.

On the left, the road whitened by light weaves past houses with red shutters. Three tiny figures are distributed across the street. A bench or low wall cuts the foreground at an angle and accentuates the proximity of the tree.

The depth of the village remains in a few houses and silhouettes, but the vibrant surface of the chestnut tree first imposes its presence.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

Work F751 is distinguished by its vertical orientation, its large tree placed on the right and the perspective of the street which opens on the left side.

01

A crown that extends beyond the frame

Van Gogh does not seek to show the entire tree. By cutting its branches and foliage, it gives the impression that the plant mass continues beyond the canvas.

02

The street as a luminous counterpoint

The strip of pale yellow soil and white facades provide a calm passage in the face of the dark density of the leaves. The characters become points of color.

03

A painted flowering without botanical detail

The flowers are evoked by short, light yellow accents. Their repetition animates the crown without transforming each cluster into an isolated motif.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

Painted in Auvers in May 1890, this oil on canvas measuring 70 × 58 cm is listed under the numbers F751 and JH1992. It is reported in a private collection in South America.

Version

F751, not F752

F751 is a vertical composition of 70 × 58 cm in private collection. The F752 version, smaller and almost square, belongs to the Kroeller-Müller Museum.

Arrival

The first days in Auvers

Van Gogh left Saint-Rémy on May 16, 1890 and quickly began painting the village. Chestnut trees in flower are among the motifs observed from this new stage.

Scale

A tree measured by the figures

The three walkers do not form an autonomous narrative scene. Their smallness immediately makes the width of the trunk and the extent of the crown perceptible.

What the painter must preserve

The painter must maintain the density of the foliage without losing the small openings, the clear road and the figures which give the tree its full scale.

  • The yellow-green crown that fills three-quarters of the canvas
  • The dark trunk branched on the right edge
  • The very clear road and the houses with red accents
  • The three tiny silhouettes under the chestnut tree

In your interior

A large, bright tree for a vertical room

Fresh greens and acidic yellows bring a strong plant presence to an entrance, living room or office. The painting matches light oak, cognac leather and unbleached walls.
