À propos de l’œuvre

Le printemps, par Claude Monet

Claude Monet · A white and green orchard near Argenteuil · Metropolitan Museum

Spring (Fruit trees in bloom) W271hand painted reproduction

Fruit trees covered in white flowers descend diagonally through a soft green orchard. The branches blend into a pale blue sky, while cold shadows roam the grass. In 1873, Monet almost entirely reduced the pattern to spring color ratios, without seeking to precisely identify the species of the trees.

Look at the work

A white bloom dissolves the trees in the light of the orchard

The main row starts near the left edge, then moves away toward the center right. The gray and brown trunks divide into thin branches covered with touches of white, cream and light blue. A secluded tree on the ridge gently closes the perspective.

The ground alternates yellow greens, blue greens and pale mauves. A broad shadow crosses the slope to the right, balancing the very bright white of the flowers. The sky occupies a relatively narrow strip and remains almost cloudless.

The flowers are not described as a botanical motif: they form a veil of light touches that transforms the entire orchard.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A diagonal that accompanies the slope

The trees gradually diminish and follow the rising relief to the right. Their rhythm builds depth without roads or architecture.

02

The white of the flowers is always colorful

Cream, pale blue, pink and gray distinguish bouquets exposed to the sun from those taken in the shade. This diversity avoids a uniform snow effect.

03

Nature almost entirely translated by color

The Met emphasizes the pastel range and clear light. The contours dissolve in favor of the juxtapositions of green, mauve and white.

Read this specific version

The visual corresponds to Spring (Fruit Trees in Bloom), or Spring, painted in 1873, inventory 26.186.1 of the Metropolitan Museum and catalog Wildenstein 271. The unique WebP measures 3,000 × 1,860 px, from the open file of the Met without artificial enlargement.

Composition01

Flower bouquets must retain voids

The white touches gather around the branches but reveal the sky and the foliage. Continuous cover would weigh down the trees.

Color02

Right shadow is cold and transparent

Blue greens and mauves darken the grass without turning black. Yellow touches remain there and retain the impression of spring.

Matter03

The trunks are thin but very present

Grey, beige and purple describe their bifurcations. They give structure to the cloud of flowers and must remain visible from a distance.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

Painted in 1873, this oil on canvas measures 62.2 × 100.6 cm. It is kept at the Metropolitan Museum of Art under inventory 26.186.1 and listed as Wildenstein 271.

Location01

An orchard near Argenteuil

Monet then worked around his house and on the banks of the Seine. This rural motif shows the diversity of this transforming suburb.

Title02

The tree species remains undetermined

The painting was called Plum Blossoms or Apple Blossoms. The Met now retains the more cautious title Flowering Fruit Trees, as the key does not allow for safe botanical identification.

Collection03

Monet's first painting entered the Met

Mary Livingston Willard bequeathed the work in 1926. It thus became the first painting by Monet to join the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • Maintain the slope and diagonal of the orchard.
  • Color the whites of the flowering.
  • Keep the right shade cool but bright.
  • Leave air intervals between branches.

Presentation in your interior

A palette designed with the room

This panoramic landscape is suitable for a living room, bedroom or dining room. An off-white, light oak or patinated silver frame prolongs its freshness; a gray, sage green or cream lilac wall reveals flowering.
