Seen from the Seine, Notre-Dame Church dominates the houses of Vétheuil and is reflected in a large expanse of calm water. The dark bell tower rises above the roofs, while the banks, boats and figures dissolve into small colored touches. Painted in 1880, this 50.5 × 61 cm oil on canvas is kept at the Southampton City Art Gallery under number 1975/183 and corresponds to Wildenstein 531.

Look at the work

The reflection enlarges the village and connects the church to the surface of the Seine

The town occupies a very compact central strip. The bell tower and the transept form an irregular pyramid above the houses, while the lower half is almost entirely reserved for water and its vertical reflections.

The facades combine cream, pink, gray and blue. In the Seine, these colors fragment into shorter lines mixed with yellow, green and purple; architectural forms then become a luminous vibration rather than an exact double.

The church remains solid in the distance, but its reflection opens and disperses in the foreground: it is this difference in material which animates the entire landscape.

A bell tower as an axis without symmetry

The tower is placed slightly to the right of the center. The houses and trees extend on either side with uneven heights which avoid a frozen monumental composition.

A truly painted view from the river

The museum notice specifies that Monet works from a boat. The low point of view explains the importance of water and the direct superposition of the village on the reflection.

Reflections painted in small units

Light and dark touches do not copy each building. They group the light into moving areas which give the river its depth.
