Falaise de Pourville, le matin, par Claude Monet

Claude Monet · 1897 · MMFA 1918.126 · W1442

Pourville Cliff, in the morning, Montreal W1442hand painted reproduction

From the height of Pourville, Monet watches a clear cliff plunge towards the English Channel. The rock mass, crossed by green, pink and purple, occupies almost the entire canvas; the sea narrows into a blue-gray band and the morning sky merges with a damp light. The pattern is solid, but each touch seems moved by the wind.

Look at the work

The clear cliff advances in a blue-gray English Channel under the cold light of an 1897 morning

The foreground is made up of short, oblique touches that suggest the grass from the cliff edge. Further on, the rock is built by cream, pink, mauve and green passages. Monet does not draw each stratum: he makes the volume felt by changes in temperature and by the direction of the brushstrokes.

The sea occupies a narrow surface, but its blues and grays open up the entire composition. Near the horizon, the paler sky dissolves in an atmosphere laden with humidity. This contrast between the very worked cliff and the more fluid distance gives the landscape its breadth.

Morning does not whiten the coast: it reveals pinks, greens and purples that the stronger light would have brought together otherwise.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A viewpoint placed at the edge of the relief

The viewer dominates the coast without seeing a path or stable terrace. This elevated position makes the cliff monumental and reduces the sea to a distant opening.

02

A rock made of colors

Cream, powder pink, purple gray, brown and green mingle in the promontory. Preserving these shades prevents the cliff from becoming a beige or gray mass without vibration.

03

Morning light without harsh shadow

Diffused light erases sharp contrasts and brings the sky closer to the sea. Depth therefore depends on small differences in blue and gray rather than a black horizon outline.

Reference image

Read this specific version

The single reference image measures 2,200 × 1,424 px. It corresponds precisely to version W1442 of the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts and has been converted into a real WebP without artificial enlargement.

Composition01

The diagonal of the coast

The cliff descends to the left and leads the gaze to the maritime strip. This movement gives a strong direction to a landscape without character or dominant architecture.

Color02

Two touch regimes

The tight, changing marks of the terrain oppose the more horizontal gestures of the water and sky. Their difference makes the material of the rock and the instability of the atmosphere.

Matter03

A cold range warmed by the ground

Morning blue grays and purples are balanced by pinks, ochres and green yellows in the cliff. This dosage must remain subtle to maintain the effect of overcast weather.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

This information concerns the Pourville Cliff, the morning of the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts, inventory 1918.126 and Wildenstein 1442.

A campaign carried out in series02

Pourville during the winter of 1897

The museum reminds that Monet then works on several views of the coast, varying the time and atmospheric conditions. The title here specifies the time of morning.

Entry into the Montreal collection03

Purchased in 1918 using the John W. Tempest fund

The work was acquired by the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts in 1918 using the collection created by the bequest of John W. Tempest.
