Setting sun, foggy weather, Pourville W782hand painted reproduction

An orange sun descends in a pink and purple mist above the sea, while the cliffs of Pourville are reduced to a blue silhouette. Signed and dated Claude Monet 82, this oil on canvas measuring 61.5 × 74.3 cm is kept in a private collection and corresponds to Wildenstein 782.

Look at the work

The mist absorbs the coast and transforms the sunset into a cloud of color

The rocky beach forms a dark strip in the foreground. Beyond, the sea extends to an almost erased coast; the solar disk, slightly off-center, becomes the only clearly defined point in the atmosphere.

Orange, pink, lilac, blue and yellow green mingle in soft touches. The clouds and water return to neighboring colors, so that the horizon becomes deliberately uncertain.

In this version, Monet no longer describes just Pourville: he paints the meeting of humid air, cold sea and a light that colors all the mist.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A motif dissolved by the atmosphere

The coast remains identifiable but its contours blend into the sky and water. Depth depends on very close chromatic variations rather than a precise design.

02

The sun as a unique accent

The small orange disk concentrates the warm intensity. Around it, pinks and purples diffuse this light instead of limiting it to a vertical reflection.

03

A foreground that stabilizes vision

Dark rocks provide a solid threshold for an almost immaterial scene. Without this band, sky and sea would merge entirely.

Reference image

Read this specific version

Only one exact image of W782 is used. The real WebP measures 1,968 × 1,630 px and cleanly reproduces the visual documented by Christie's, without artificial enlargement.

Composition01

Preserve the delicacy of the solar disk

It must remain small and integrated into the mist. A color that is too saturated or an outline that is too hard would artificially detach it from the sky.

Color02

Keep the yellow greens in the sea

They balance pinks and purples and reflect filtered light. Removing them would make the whole thing excessively cold.

Matter03

Keep the coast almost erased

It must remain readable as a distant presence, without invented details. Its softness is the signature of the misty effect of W782.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

Christie's documents Setting Sun, Misty Weather, Pourville, oil on canvas from 1882, 61.5 × 74.3 cm, signed and dated lower left, listed Wildenstein 782.

Viewpoint01

The coast looked west from the rocky beach

Monet faces the cliffs and Pointe de l'Ailly, in evening light filtered by the maritime mist.

Provenance02

Durand-Ruel acquired the painting from Monet in 1883

The merchant received it directly from the artist in December 1883 before its passage through several private collections, probably including that of Albert Spencer.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • The Wildenstein 782 version
  • The little orange sun in the mist
  • The yellow-green and purple sea
  • The Pourville coast almost dissolved
