Bras de Seine in Giverny W1008hand painted reproduction

A calm arm of the Seine crosses a screen of vegetation whose branches seem to enter the sky. At the lower edge, the water receives blue, green, pink and purple streaks; further on, a small dark boat gives the scale of this abundant nature. Painted in 1885, this oil on canvas measuring 66 × 93 cm is kept at the Marmottan Monet museum under number 5175 and corresponds to Wildenstein 1008.

Look at the work

The water opens a bright clearing in the middle of the banks of Giverny

The large mass of trees on the left edge extends to the top of the canvas and forms an irregular vault. Monet, however, avoids the wall effect: between the branches appear areas of blue, pale pink and white which circulate the sky into the foliage.

The opposite bank occupies a low strip, almost entirely made of green and purple touches. The long horizontal marks of the water do not mechanically repeat the trees; they disperse their colors according to the current and lead the gaze towards the small boat placed near the luminous opening.

The painting does not only describe a place: it shows how the same ray passes from the sky to the foliage, then fragments on the surface of the Seine.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A deliberately asymmetrical vegetal vault

The dark weight of the large left tree is compensated by the bouquets further down the right bank. Between them, the clear sky forms an open diagonal which prevents the landscape from closing.

02

Water built in colored strata

Turquoise blues, greens, lilacs, pinks and almost black accents overlap in broken bands. Their horizontal direction distinguishes the river from the shorter, rotating touches of the foliage.

03

The boat as a distance marker

Placed far from the center and reduced to a few dark accents, the boat measures the extent of the Arm of the Seine without transforming the scene into an animated story.

Reference image

Read this specific version

The single image comes directly from the Marmottan Monet museum notice. It is kept at 1,500 × 1,049 px then encoded in real WebP, without artificial enlargement.

Composition01

Preserve clear opening between the two banks

This central breathing is essential. Trees that are too dense or too uniform would remove the depth and sensation of air passing through W1008.

Color02

Store roses and violets in water

The river is neither blue nor green uniformly. The reflected warm shades link the surface to the sky and give the landscape its changing atmosphere.

Matter03

Keep the gestures distinct from the brush

The foliage is mounted in short, curved strokes, while the water receives stretched lines. Smoothing these differences would cause the pattern structure to lose.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

The Marmottan Monet museum documents Bras de Seine in Giverny, oil on canvas signed from 1885, 66 × 93 cm, inventory 5175 and Wildenstein catalog 1008.

Giverny01

A motif found near the Pressoir house

Monet moved to Giverny in 1883. Two years later, he was already exploring the banks and arms of the neighboring river, well before the great Mornings on the Seine in the 1890s.

Transmission02

The legacy of Michel Monet in 1966

The painting enters the Marmottan Monet museum with the legacy of the artist's youngest son. This donation constitutes the heart of the Monet collection, now kept in Paris.

Back to the pattern03

Presented in Giverny for the centenary of 2026

The work was brought together with the landscape that inspired it in the exhibition Before the Water Lilies. Monet discovers Giverny, dedicated to the years 1883 -1890.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • The Wildenstein 1008 version
  • The large foliage vault on the left
  • The little boat near the gap
  • The pink, blue and green reflections of the Seine

A palette designed with the room

This horizontal format is suitable for a living room, dining room or large office. A sage green, mist blue or warm ivory wall and a dark wooden frame extend the plant depth without extinguishing reflections.
