Look at the work

The modern harvest facing the city of Arles

Van Gogh painted the Crau plain in the summer of 1888, when ripe wheat transformed the landscape into a golden expanse. In this vertical version, a couple of harvesters work in the center; their tiny gestures give the measure of a field which occupies almost the entire height of the canvas.

The silhouette of Arles closes the horizon with its roofs, towers and chimneys. In front of it, a red train advances laterally, releasing steam. The artist thus brings together the manual work of the fields, the industrial city and the railway network in the same solar vision.

The composition appears dominated by a single color, but the yellow is crossed by ocher, pink, green and blue: a light constructed by the touch rather than a simple flat.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The F545 version can be recognized by its vertical format, the two central figures and the red train placed in front of the bluish profile of Arles.

01

A monumental field

The very high horizon line leaves most of the canvas to the wheat. The figures appear small, but their central position makes them immediately readable.

02

A red train

The locomotive and its wagons form a thin horizontal line. The steam responds to the smoke from the chimneys and animates the boundary between field and city.

03

Several yellows

Gold, lemon, ocher and beige overlap in wheat. Blue and purple touches prevent the light from becoming uniform.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

Inventory P.07304 and references F545/JH1477 precisely identify the painting from the Rodin Museum among the numerous harvests painted in 1888 and 1889.

These references distinguish the view of Arles from the fields of Saint-Rémy's compositions devoted to the solitary reaper.

Detail

The railway

The train visible in front of Arles introduces modern speed into a harvest scene whose gestures remain entirely manual.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The painter must preserve the immense scale of the field and the tiny details of the horizon without darkening the yellow light that unites the entire scene.

  • The horizon line placed in the upper quarter
  • The two harvesters and their distinct gestures
  • The red train and its plumes of steam
  • The blue profile of the buildings of Arles
  • The variety of yellows, ochres and pinks in wheat
