Claude Monet · Camille and Jean in front of the family home · Art Institute of Chicago

The Artist's House in Argenteuil W284hand painted reproduction

Jean Monet stops with his hoop in the middle of a wide alley, while Camille appears in the doorway. The facade with red shutters, covered with vines, borders a meticulously flowered garden punctuated with large blue pots. In 1873, Monet painted the new stability of his life in Argenteuil in a clear, calm and very personal scene.

Look at the work

The driveway, blue pots and flowers transform the house into a family scene

The facade occupies the entire right side and leaks towards the bottom. Its cool shade covers part of the path, while the left garden receives more sun. Jean, small and almost centered, serves as a pivot between these two areas.

The blue and white pots punctuate the borders in two irregular rows. Red of the flowers and shutters, green of the foliage, yellow of the house and blue of the sky respond to each other around the beige path. Camille, in a blue dress, blends into the shadow of the door.

Long before Giverny, Monet already composed a garden like a painting: path, pots, flowers and figures are placed to lead the light to the house.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

An open perspective like an invitation

The wide trapezoidal path starts from the lower edge and leads directly towards Jean then towards the door. The viewer seems to be able to enter the garden.

02

Repetitions that liven up the border

The blue pots are neither identical nor evenly spaced. Their size variations and the red spots of the flowers establish a living rhythm along the facade.

03

The house of a more assured period

The Art Institute connects the tranquility of the stage to recent sales in Durand-Ruel. The rented home in Argenteuil then gave Monet new financial and family stability.

Read this specific version

The visual corresponds to La Maison de l'artiste in Argenteuil, 1873, inventory 1933.1153 of the Art Institute of Chicago and catalog Wildenstein 284. The unique WebP measures 2,200 × 1,789 px, definition of the exact file selected, without artificial enlargement.

Composition01

The path combines shadow and light

Beiges, pinks, blues and greens shape its surface. A uniform path would eliminate the gradual passage between sun and facade.

Color02

Blue pots structure without aligning perfectly

Their white and blue decor varies depending on the distance. They must decrease towards the background while maintaining distinct silhouettes.

Matter03

Jean and Camille remain small presences

Their clothes are indicated by a few touches. Detailing them like isolated portraits would break the scale and tranquility of the garden.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

Painted in 1873, this oil on canvas measures 60.2 × 73.3 cm. It is kept at the Art Institute of Chicago under the inventory 1933.1153 and listed as Wildenstein 284.

Family01

Jean in the hoop and Camille in the door

The Chicago notice identifies Monet's five- or six-year-old son and his wife. Their positions give the garden the character of a truly inhabited daily space.

Address02

Monet's first house in Argenteuil

The family rented the Aubry house, at the corner of rue Pierre-Guienne and boulevard Saint-Denis, from December 1871 to the summer of 1874. It was demolished in 1913.

Collection03

The Ryerson legacy entered in 1933

The painting joins the Art Institute with the collection of Martin A. Ryerson and his wife. It is today presented in the 201 gallery according to the museum notice.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • Retain the wide perspective of the driveway.
  • Vary the blue and white pots.
  • Keeping Camille in the shadows of the door.
  • Vibrate the red flowers without evening them out.
