Look at the work

The mechanical bridge dominates a daily scene bathed in color

The two large wooden porticos stand out against the sky and frame the cart. Beneath them, the dark opening of the bridge draws the eye towards the central part of the canal.

The bank arrives diagonally from the lower left corner. It leads to the group of washerwomen, then to the bridge, while the curves of the water and the reeds in the foreground slow down the gaze.

Pont de Langlois with washerwomen is an oil on canvas of 54 × 64 cm painted in Arles around mid-March 1888. The work F397/JH1368 is kept at the Kroeller-Müller Museum under number KM 111.056.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

The museum highlights the dynamic composition of this version: the canal and the bank install a large diagonal, a process that Van Gogh knew from Japanese prints collected with his brother Theo.

01

The diagonal connects the washerwomen to the bridge

The orange and green bank starts from the foreground, runs along the boat then joins the arch. This visual journey unites human work with the monumental structure.

02

The yellow of the wood responds to the blue of the South

The porticos and light masonry oppose the sky and the canal. This contrast makes the bridge immediately readable despite the profusion of small touches.

03

The cart fixes the moment represented

Its passage over the deck indicates that the deck is lowered and in service. This small scene gives a concrete function to the mechanism painted with such precision.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

References F397/JH1368 and KM 111.056 designate the mid-March 1888 version with cart and washerwomen. Van Gogh dedicated several paintings, drawings and watercolors to the same bridge; the variants differ in point of view and figures.

Series

A repeated study of the same drawbridge

Shortly after his arrival in Arles, Van Gogh returned several times to this mechanism of wood and chains, varying the framing, time and activity around the canal.

Letter

Van Gogh describes the scene to Theo

In his March 1888 correspondence, he mentions the blue sky and water, the orange banks, the little cart and the women washing clothes in colorful headdresses.

Collection

Acquired by Helene Kroeller-Müller in 1912

The museum says she paid more than five times the asking price. She then considered this painting to be one of the most powerful and clear Van Goghs in her collection.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

The copy must respect the geometry of the porticos, the cart on the deck, the group of washerwomen, the oblique boat, the swirls of the canal and the decisive contrast between yellows and blues.

  • The two yellow porticos of the bridge
  • The cart in the center of the apron
  • The washerwomen grouped on the bank
  • The boat moored diagonally
  • The blue and green curves of the water
