Waterloo Bridge, gray weather W1562hand painted reproduction

Under a yellow gray sky, Waterloo Bridge forms a slate blue strip punctuated by four light arches. Chimneys emerge from the mist and a small boat passes under the bridge. This oil on canvas measuring 65 × 101.5 cm, signed lower right, is Wildenstein 1562.

Look at the work

An industrial bridge absorbed by gray weather

The apron cuts the composition in the middle and separates two spaces of the same density: the sky laden with smoke and the Thames covered with horizontal wrinkles. The pillars are never isolated by a line; they appear when the blue of the bridge meets the warmer light of the arches.

The range initially appears monochrome, but it mixes green gray, Prussian blue, mauve and sulfur beige. A few darker touches indicate traffic on the bridge. Under the central arch, the tiny boat gives the scale of the monument and the depth of the river.

In W1562, gray is not an absence of color: it results from the balance between yellow smoke, blue stone and purple reflections.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

The version kept in Bern

The Kunstmuseum Bern gives the Wildenstein number 1562, the date 1903 and the exact dimensions of 65 × 101.5 cm. The signature "Claude Monet 1903" is painted gray in the lower right corner.

02

The Savoy Hotel viewpoint

Monet looks out over Waterloo Bridge from his room on the north bank of the River Thames. The view plunges slightly over the bridge, boats and smoke from the opposite industrial bank.

03

A provenance documented by the Gurlitt legacy

The museum file traces the passage of the work by Durand-Ruel and Paul Cassirer before his entry into the Gurlitt family. The painting joined the Kunstmuseum Bern by bequest in 2014.

Read this specific version

Only one image is used: the exact view of W1562, converted into a true WebP of 1,350 × 869 px at its native resolution, without artificial enlargement.

Composition01

Four unevenly visible arches

The mist should not be reproduced by uniform blur. Each arch maintains a different intensity, from the large clear opening on the left to the more muffled shapes on the right.

Color02

A gray sky crossed by heat

Earthy yellows and very diluted mauves avoid a only blue scene. They reflect the mixture of natural light, steam and urban smoke.

Matter03

Horizontal keys on the Thames

The river is built in small blue-gray and purple bands. Their direction must remain lateral in order to support the large panoramic format and the weight of the bridge.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

The Kunstmuseum Bern identifies the work as Waterloo Bridge, gray time, dated 1903, oil on canvas 65 × 101.5 cm, inventory 157371 and Wildenstein 1562.

Signature01

Bottom right, painted gray

The inscription "Claude Monet 1903" measures approximately 3.1 × 19 cm according to the material examination published in the basis of the Gurlitt legacy.

Collection02

Kunstmuseum Bern, Cornelius Gurlitt legacy 2014

The museum also preserves documentation of the reverse, labels and frame marks, useful for following the material history of the painting.

Catalog03

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • The exact version of the Kunstmuseum Bern, Wildenstein 1562
  • The original format of 65 × 101.5 cm
  • The arches melted without losing their rhythm
  • The mixture of blue grays, mauves and smoky yellows

A palette designed with the room

This mineral harmony is suitable for a contemporary office, library or living room. Walnut, weathered metal, warm gray and a petrol blue textile highlight the deck without cooling the entire room.
