À propos de l’œuvre

Le Pont du chemin de fer à Argenteuil, par Claude Monet

Claude Monet · Train, metal bridge and sailboat on the Seine · Philadelphia Museum of Art

The Railway Bridge in Argenteuil W318hand painted reproduction

A train crosses the Argenteuil metal bridge and pushes long white smoke in front of it, while a sailboat slides over the Seine. The clear piers are reflected in the blue water and the banks frame the passage. In 1874, Monet brought together in the same light the countryside, water sports and modern infrastructure that connected the suburbs to Paris.

Look at the work

The bridge connects the speed of the train to the bright calm of the river

The structure enters from the wooded bank on the right and runs diagonally to the left. Its cylindrical piles and metal crosspieces repeat above the water. The train, reduced to a few red and dark rectangles, animates the upper line of the apron.

On the left, the white sailboat advances in an open space and responds to the illuminated piles. Touches of yellow, pink and blue extend their shapes in the reflections. The dark bank in the foreground establishes a powerful contrast with the sky and the river.

Monet does not choose between nature and industry: the smoke from the train becomes a cloud, while the iron from the bridge contributes to the rhythm of the trees and the reflections.

Composition, touch and light

What Monet builds behind the impression of snapshot

Three precise elements allow us to understand this composition and the essential difficulties of faithful reproduction.

01

A diagonal that gives momentum to architecture

The apron is not parallel to the frame: it moves back to the left and draws the gaze into depth. The train accentuates this horizontal movement, while the batteries stabilize it vertically.

02

The sailboat humanizes the scale of the bridge

Its small triangular sail measures the height of the structure and recalls the leisure use of the Seine. Its warm white dialogues with the lights placed on the piles.

03

Modernity integrated into the landscape

The Philadelphia notice highlights the presence of industrial France in the works of the 1860s -1870s. Here, the railway does not destroy the landscape: it becomes its main motif.

Reference image

Read this specific version

The visual corresponds to the Argenteuil Railway Bridge of the Philadelphia Museum of Art, object 101731 and Wildenstein catalog 318. The unique WebP measures 3,000 × 2,196 px, since reduced the institutional file by 4,096 px without artificial enlargement.

Composition01

The deck and the batteries retain their geometry

The bridge lines must remain structured without becoming mechanically straight. The visible touch connects the metal to the rest of the landscape.

Color02

Smoke contains the colors of the sky

White, cream, blue and yellow shape it into several clouds. Purely white smoke would appear stuck above the train.

Matter03

The reflections extend without copying

Under each pile, the vertical touches fragment in the undulations. They take up the colors of the work but never its exact contours.

Documented benchmarks

Three pieces of information specific to this work

This oil on canvas from 1874 measures 54.3 × 73.3 cm. Preserved at the Philadelphia Museum of Art under object 101731, it is listed as Wildenstein 318.

Context01

The railway puts Argenteuil within reach of Paris

The bridge crossed the Seine on the line serving the suburbs. The same connection allowed Parisians to come canoeing and artists to work quickly outside the capital.

Pattern02

Four views of the railway bridge in 1874

Monet takes over the work from several locations and under different lights. This version is distinguished by its large sailboat on the left and the apron rising from the right bank.

Collection03

A work from the John G. Johnson collection

The painting belongs to the ensemble donated to Philadelphia by lawyer and collector John G. Johnson, one of the museum's major historical collections.

Your reproduction

What the painter must preserve

Fidelity here depends on precise relationships between light, touch, depth and color temperature.

  • Respect the exact diagonal of the apron.
  • Keep the train small but readable.
  • Build smoke with colored whites.
  • Fragmenting the reflections of batteries in water.

A palette designed with the room

This peaceful modern landscape is suitable for a living room, office or library. A midnight blue, smoked wood or patinated silver frame accompanies the deck; a cream, gray blue or dark green wall reveals the sailboat.
