A cirque of pink, purple and yellow cliffs surrounds the green waters of Port-Domois, while a pierced rock rises slightly to the left of the center. Monet closes the horizon with a long rocky wall and places his gaze above the cove, as close as possible to the movement of the sea. Signed and dated 1887, this oil on canvas measuring 64.8 × 81.3 cm is kept at the Yale University Art Gallery under number 1983.7.10 and corresponds to Wildenstein 1108.

Look at the work

A mineral cove where the sea circulates between the rocks

Two dark promontories advance from the lower corners and form a visual entrance to the central basin. At the bottom, the cliffs occupy the entire width, with a large light wall in the center, the pierced rock on the left and a more vertical mass on the right.

The water changes from turquoise to deep blue then emerald green, with white lines that indicate foam. The rocks accumulate touches of pink, orange, purple and yellow. The sky, softer, takes on these colors in bluish gray and pink without distracting attention from the relief.

In Port-Domois, Monet did not paint a simple coastal panorama: he made the rock a colorful body and the sea a force which enters, turns and exits between the masses of stone.

An amphitheater composition

The bottom cliffs and side promontories surround the water like a natural enclosure. This organization focuses the eye on the pierced rock and gives the cove a spectacular depth.

The light engraved in the rock

The walls are never uniformly brown. Vertical touches of yellow, pink, blue and purple reflect the strata, crevices and changes in orientation in the face of light.

A sea built by colorful plans

Greens dominate near rocks, blues extend into the central part, and whites mark breaking points. These variations make the movement without drawing each wave.

Keep the pierced rock to the left of the center

Its irregular silhouette and dark opening allow W1108 to be precisely identified. It must remain integrated into the rocky group rather than becoming an isolated monument.

Color02

Preserve the roses and yolks of the cliffs

These colors give the feeling of light on the stone. Replacing them with neutral browns would cause the vibration specific to the Belle-Île countryside to be lost.

Matter03

Keeping more horizontal keys in the water

The gesture changes between sea and rock. The bands and commas of the water must circulate around the islets, while the walls rest on more vertical and struck marks.

The Yale University Art Gallery documents Port-Domois, Belle-Isle, oil on canvas signed and dated 1887, 64.8 × 81.3 cm, inventory 1983.7.10 and Wildenstein catalog 1108.

Campaign01

A motif discovered on Belle-Île in the fall of 1886

Monet stayed on the island from September to November 1886 and took over the same rock formations several times. Yale's painting is dated 1887, a sign of work continued or completed after his return.

Pattern02

La Roche Percée in the center of the bay

Yale's publication identifies the central formation as the Roche Percée de Port-Domois. W1108 belongs to a small group of compositions devoted to this same motif in different lights.

Collection03

The collection of Paul and Bunny Mellon

Purchased in Monet by Durand-Ruel in March 1887, the work went through several European collections before being acquired by the Mellons in 1968 and then entering Yale under number 1983.7.10.
