Paysanne avec un enfant sur ses genoux, par Vincent van Gogh

Peasant girl with a child on her lap, F149Reproduction of oil painting on canvas
In the shadow of a peasant interior, a white-capped mother holds her child tight against her. Van Gogh unites the two profiles by the warm light of faces, hands and shoes, while their clothes blend into the dark.
Look at the work
Two profiles united in the same shadow
The mother is turned to the left; the child's face appears just in front of his shoulder. The white cap draws the upper limit, and the woman's hands frame the small body on her knees.
The clothes are painted almost black brown. Thin touches of ocher and red illuminate the foreheads, noses, fingers and hooves, giving the scene its silent rhythm.
Peasant with a child on her lap F149/JH690 is a 43.3 × 34.5 cm oil on canvas painted in Nuenen in March-April 1885. The work belongs to a private collection.
Composition, touch and color
Three observations specific to this painting
This mother is not Gordina de Groot, then single and childless. Christie's places her in the peasant studies campaign that leads Van Gogh to the Potato Eaters.
The profiles overlap
The child's face is placed in front of that of the mother without masking it. Their proximity makes the physical link immediately readable.
The hands articulate the scene
One hand supports the child while the other moves down to the knee. Their clear accents connect the faces at the bottom of the painting.
Black becomes an atmosphere
Background, dress and jacket almost merge. The slight differences in brown keep the bodies present without breaking intimacy.
Documented benchmarks
Precisely identify the original work
The sales notice documents an oil on canvas of 43.3 × 34.5 cm painted in Nuenen in March-April 1885. The reasoned references are F149/JH690.
A mother now unidentified
The model belongs to the peasant environment of Nuenen. The presence of the child excludes the identification sometimes put forward with Gordina de Groot.
Towards Potato Eaters
After studying heads, Van Gogh expanded his compositions to include entire figures and domestic gestures observed in cottages.
From Theo to private collections
The painting passed from Vincent to Theo then to Johanna van Gogh-Bonger before joining several European and American collections.
