A peasant woman advances her spade in front of several thatched roofs which fill almost the entire background. Its dark dress, light ground and vast slopes of the houses form a sober vision of rural life in Nuenen.

A worker in front of "human nests"
The woman occupies the bottom of the composition, slightly to the right of the center. She holds her tool at an angle and tilts her body towards the ground, wearing a blue-green skirt and a light cap.
Behind it, two large roofs go very low, pierced with small black openings. A few poplars and a band of blue-gray sky appear above the ridges.
Peasant digging in front of her cottage F142/JH807 is an oil on canvas mounted on 31.3 × 42 cm cardboard painted in Nuenen in June 1885. It is kept at the Art Institute of Chicago under number 1968.92.
Composition, touch and color
Three observations specific to this painting
The peasant woman and the houses share the same grays, browns and greens. Rather than isolating the figure, Van Gogh visually connects it to its environment and working the land.
The spade creates an active diagonal
The handle starts from the hands and goes down towards the lower edge. This line extends the inclination of the body and makes the gesture immediately readable.
Roofs occupy background
Their wide beige-gray slopes almost form a wall behind the woman. Black openings and chimneys prevent this surface from becoming uniform.
The sky brings cold breathing
A blue-gray stripe and a few light clouds pass above the houses. They bring out the poplars and lighten the mass of the thatch.

F142 shows several light roofs and a woman standing with her spade. F89/JH803, kept in Tokyo, is dominated by a single brown roof and a much smaller figure.
