Look at the work

A modest gesture painted with precision

The woman is seen almost in profile, her bust leaning towards the basket. The hat forms the lightest area; the face, forearms and hands descend diagonally towards the potatoes.

The ocher background, brown bodice and dark skirt are linked by a wide touch. The small yellow shapes of the basket and the highlights of the headdress provide just enough light to separate the volumes.

Peasant Peeling Potatoes F145/JH653 is an oil on canvas mounted on a 43 × 31 cm panel, executed in Nuenen in February 1885 and kept in a private collection.

Composition, touch and color

Three observations specific to this painting

This version can be recognized by the basket placed on the knees, the light cap and the chair back visible behind the figure. Van Gogh tightens the frame so that the activity fills almost the entire picture.

01

The gaze follows the diagonal of the arms

From the leaning face to the basket, forearms and hands form a continuous line. She immediately directs attention to peeling.

02

The hat lights up the head

Its cream grays stand out from the earthy background. The headdress gives a rounded volume to the skull without resorting to a regular contour.

03

The basket closes the composition

Its oval mass connects the two hands and stabilizes the bottom of the painting. Potatoes are suggested by a few warm touches.

Documented benchmarks

Precisely identify the original work

References F145/JH653 designate this peasant woman sitting in the basket. The catalogs give it as an oil on canvas mounted on a 43 × 31 cm panel, painted in Nuenen in February 1885.

Identity

F145 and JH653

The basket held on the knees and the pose collected allow this work to be distinguished from other potato peelers.

Subject

The work made visible

The knife, fingers and basket occupy the real center of the image: daily activity gives its structure to the pose.

Conservation

Private collection

The work is now documented outside of a permanent public museum collection.
